How to catch wood chips from chipper?

I bought a used troybilt chipper shredder a couple of weeks ago. I set it up and chipped up a big pile of limbs. The problem is that the air leaves the chute so forcefully that it actually dug a hole! I know that the wood chips went somewhere, but they were so widely dispersed that raking them up was not an option. I'd really like to use the chips for mulch...which is why I bought it in the first place. Anyone have this machine and solved this problem?

I put a tarp under the chipper, but mind didn't send them out THAT hard.

Make an open ended "sock" of shadecloth. Please wear a good respiratory mask while using one of these machines.

Do you have the bag? Could you build some kind of box on the ground and cover with a tarp. Cattle panel arched into a tunnel, maybe....James

I use my chipper to make tmr (total mixed ration) for my animals. I took an old sheet and sewed a bag to catch feed and fodder. Fold it long way, sew down the long end all the way. Close one end with old twine. Just bunch and wrap. Put the other open end around the discharge shoot and attach around with twine or bungee cord. As soon as I have free time I want to make a video. Or I could take pictures.

been a long time, but we would use some plywood to make a 3 sided bin and let it build up in there, kinda like the trucks with the industrial wood chippers but with no roof.

Yes please! A picture would be very helpful. I'm picturing a tube with a burlap bag on the end to let the air out or maybe a basket of some kind.

I didn't know they came with bags. Obviously the previous owner failed to mention that.

We have a Jimna PTO chipper for our tractor. It has a chute that would spray into the woods. I put a length of 8 Inch Galv. stove pipe and a 90% bend over the chute end and now if sprays down into our EZ-GO utility carts dump bed. We use the chips for walkways and parking areas.

Get you about 20/25ft of 1/4" hardware cloth, form a C shape using some of the wire for the top. Put the discharge in the open part of the C---This will catch about anything your shredder throws out.

This is what I did with my chipper too. It works great and only took a minute to rig up.

If I am picturing this correctly, you angle the stove pipe upwards so that it will have enough height to clear the trailer? Then you place a 90 on it to direct it down. My machine definitely blows hard enough to carry the chips uphill. If I raise the safety guard that curves the force downwards, there is a rectangular square opening. Isn't there a stove pipe fitting that goes from a rectangle to a round? Would that work? I am really excited about the possibility of being able to load it into a trailer. I have a 4 wheeler trailer that dumps that would be perfect for this!

they usually come with a bag..I would suggest a tarp or a box or a wheelborrow or something like that to stop them..watch for ricochet into your face..wear protection

Steve in PA 01/19/14 12:56 PM

I use this bag

My old chipper had a similar one and my new one had a catch container that sucks because it fills up very quickly and clogs up the chute.

This bag holds much more and it's very easy to change. Haven't had any clogging problems since I started using it. For ~$2.00 you can't beat it.

myheaven 01/19/14 01:34 PM

That's a good idea too Steve. We have them at our dollar store. Ill have to remember them when I'm doing ensilage and need many bags easy to lift.

TxMex 01/19/14 02:10 PM

Thank you Steve! I may eventually rig up the chute with stove pipe, but this is something I can do now. I may even buy 2 and sew them together to make a longer tube. Hmm, I wonder if installing some wire hoops wouldn't make it fill better.

Alice In TX/MO 01/19/14 03:03 PM

Mine did not come with a bag, and I bought it new. It discharges at the bottom. No room for a chute, either.

As the bag fills the contents catch in the bottom. It acts as a parachute and keeps the bag fully inflated. I've found no need to do anything special and the bag will fill completely from the bottom to the top before clogging the chute on mine.

They're so easy to change with the drawstring I don't think you'd need to string them together. Just fill one, switch, and fill the other before you empty them.

myheaven 01/19/14 04:27 PM

If you have a dollar tree near you, they have them for only a buck.

Mine is on a 3-point mounted PTO chipper so it's already high enough...just used the elbow (I actually used HVAC duct) to direct it down. I think the way you described it would work with your chipper.

Maybe lay a tarp under it.

HEY TM. I bought a Troy built chipper shredder and the blade was dull. I had to find one in Pueblo Colorado. Troy built is out of business. The machine works great with the new blade. My discharge is out of the bottom so I just move the machine. I am thinking of raising it up to allow a wheel barrow or dump cart under it. Glad to see you still on here.

TxMex 01/19/14 10:14 PM

LOL...you won't get rid of me easily Big Dave. I take breaks from time to time while I'm traveling, but I'm probably settled in for good this time. Won't be selling this place and I've got so much to do that I have no time to travel.
