I bought my place from a real jerk. I insisted on buying the whole 30 acres, because i didn't want him for a neighbor. Before we moved in, people came through and broke windows, stole stuff, one outfit even "borrowed" our electric meter, ran up a $180 bill on it and put it back in.......I thought it was funny, but DW wanted to shoot somebody. I calculated that they did not know us yet and thought they were stealing from the previous owner, who had dang sure stolen from them.

Once we moved in, if anybody wandered onto the place, I showed up quick and asked them what they were doing there and why. I was quick to tell the kids that they needed to stay on the roads or play at home, because my place was private property, all in a friendly way, but firmly, and always with a gun strapped on.

I only had to tell then once, with a single exception. The second time I told him, he stayed told. I never did post the place and do not intend posing it. My neighbors kinow they can come over and talk for a few minutes, but nobody comes around when I am gone.

One can usually make it plain what is expected if one starts out polite and friendly but firm. Over the years, we have had a few bad neighbors, but those kind rarely last in a rural setting and waiting them out for a few months works pretty well for the kind that obviously need to go back to town to be near the welfare office.

Just keep in mind, that beforfe you move in, you are faceless to them, but once they kinow who you are, they will change their habbits, either for the better or worse. Which it will be is up to you.....Joe

They do have a nasty habit of spreading, don't they? Years ago the Missouri Conservation talked up that plant as being great for birds, etc. Yeah the birds love the berries, eat them up and promptly plant the seeds----everywhere. So now they are no longer on the approved list.

If it was me i would start with a couple of No Trespassing SIgns and mark your lines out with some spray paint. If I lived in an area for awhile and thought property was abandoned then to see new signs and paint it would send me on my way to another abandoned spot. If that doesn't stop it, proceed with some cameras.

The biggest problem I see from your picture is a rock outcropping and having a young bit next door. You'd probably have had a tough time keeping me away when I was a youngster.

Yea - I know what you mean - they sure did stop any snowmobiles from driving through - but yes they spread around like crazy - they did grow real fast - that was good - so I got rid of the snowmobile problem and now have an Autumn Olive problem - of the two I much have the latter one - I'm gradually replacing them with Burning Bushes - I'll tell you one thing they do make a hell of a good fence - ain't nothing going to get through them - with the pickers and all -

I got me a Stihl pole saw so I could reach under them and cut them out without getting filled with thorns.. Man are those things nasty when they get in you.. like nice little puss blisters...

As my neighbor says about them, another government program gone awry... In our area, they planted them in a reclaimed strip mine just up the road... after 40 years now, everyone in the area hates them... They are more of a problem than bad neighbors are..

When most people think of burning bush, this is what they think of.

However, depending on where you live, there is a native burning bush, it's in the same family, and some people call it eastern wahoo. It's native around here, but rare. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Euonymus_atropurpureus

Some people call Flowering Quince a "burning bush", mainly because in the spring the red flowers are so bright. Makes a great fence--stickers about an inch or so long:

Washington Hawthorn makes a prettier fence:

It's thorny, too, but makes a better looking fence than the quince.
