I was wondering when someone would notice that LOL. Actually I am really sorry you are having water problems during this cold snap. Maybe you could insulate that old cistern/basment space and it would keep the pipes warmer too....one never knows where the cold wind blows...after all. sis

Okay three days now. I really hope you have water.
Please do comment and tell us how you got it to work.
Or are you still working in the cold digging up that old tank?

I know that it is going to be a multi-hour project and did not have time for it during the week. I'm hitting it full bore tomorrow. We have drinking water ans enough water stored to flush the terlet a couple times a day. Been cleaning up with baby butt wipes. Bought some paper plates and plastic forks.

Are you getting any relief from the cold? We warmed up 12-15 degrees warmer here. With freeze problems it can move a long way without the water flow to warm things. I have found that some very small openings that allow the wind to move cold air onto the lines freeze things quick.

I have asked for years, WHY CAN"T THESE PROBLEMS GIVE NOTICE ON NICE WARM SUNSHINY DAYS?
Hope you get it figured out soon. Dealing with frozen water in sub zero weather is sure no fun.

Rustaholic,
You gave me a great idea. We haul water, but need a pump to house. I want to add filters, My 1550 gal tank is buried two ft. What I will do is build the valve area off the tank up the two ft. with the block I have, then level out the dirt & build a small pump house to hold the pump 12V & filters. Make a small but big enough I can get to things easy maybe a 4'x4'. shelter. That will cover the block pit easily. I plan to use 1/2" pex inside PVC for underground to house. Were I'm building it can get cold it was 9 degrees a week ago at night. Day warm to the 30-50s. The average lows are in the teens & 20s.

It was just frozen way deep. The well guy proposed pulling the pump, cutting off the casing down in the pit and putting in a submersible. I'm sick of dealing with the above ground pump in a cold building so I went for it. $1700 later (including a frost free hydrant) I have a new system. I really didn't even know that I could convert it to a submersible.

I loved my submersible pump, I never had freezing problems but I did keep a light on (I used a heat lamp that one gets for cold foals), works a treat at keeping all the lines exposed to the cold air quite toasty and you can put it on a timer so it will come on during the coldest days and if you are really good at stuff like that, you can also put it on a rheostat type thing that will cut the power so that it stays on all the time but doesn't get too hot..

This ^^ saved my bacon many, many times.

Glad you found the cause and now have a submersible!

I have Groupies! LOL Want a backstage pass?

Of course with the water being off so long the septic froze up. I just finished getting that cleared up. I ran a lot of hot water after I cleared the path. Mama is chomping at the bit to take a shower but I told her she better let the hot water recover or she might end up with a cold rinse!

Glad to hear you have your water back. I think you will like the submersible pump and they are a much simpler system to use and repair. It sucks to spend the money but it is good to solve the headaches of water problems.

What size is your well pipe?
The only submersible I want to go to is a pump cylinder hooked to my hand pump.
