Neighbor built a new outhouse. He was a scrawny little guy, his wife was very well endowed. He sat her down and drew around her to figure the dimensions of the hole, then made a hole for himself. One night he came home late from fox hunting, went to the outhouse, a few sheets to the wind, sat down on DW side and fell through the hole. See, our outhouse had lids for every hole. The children's was much lower and had a childsize hole. I was six and uncle took measure of me, had me sit down to see if my feet touched the ground.

I don't have a problem with a two holer, unless it's a two story.

I don't understand why an outhouse is illegal in some states. They are more friendly to the environment than a septic tank. In Missouri outhouses are legal, and IIRC you need a minimum of three acres to install a septic.

We have a outhouse that has a sawdust toilet on our property. I plan on keeping it even after we build our house (with an inhouse!).
I had an old great aunt in TN who's adult children installed a bathroom for her. They figured at 80 she was too old to be traipsing out to the outhouse in the winter.
She never would use it though. She said a toilet in the house was "nasty".

One of my granddads rants was "I don't know what's wrong with this generation that you think you're supposed to eat outside and crap in your house!"

I too like outhouses so I don't have to run inside with (fill in the blank) on my boots. Just keep it all outside.
In the Outhouse book I gave to my Dad, among the many designs and placements of the outhouses--(one was set on the edge of a cliff) one had a sliding plank with different size holes. One just slid the plank to the size needed.
God bless,

We have a "special stick" to knock over the mid winter poop tower. Don't need two holes just one stick. Just don't forget which stick you've been using for that purpose!

There isn't a clean toilet all the way to the lake any more. They locked them all up except Gunsight and I doubt that they will plow so it can be used.
Blue foam for a weekend cabin is different than for a full year home.

We have a regular seat too that I glued down to the box hiding the container.
There's weather stripping between the seat and the box to prevent hiding spots for spiders!

When I was 4 years old we moved from the big city to live with grandma out in the country where all she had was a outhouse and no running water. I was just scared to death to have to go use the loo. One day I was sitting down when I happen to hear movement underneath me. I looked down and noticed there was eyes starring back at me. I hopped up right fast and as I went screaming out the door I looked back into the hole and noticed it was a raccoon. It was the first time I'd ever seen such a critter.
Then one day I sit down and looked up and over the doorway was a huge spider with a great big egg sack on it's back. Of coarse I didn't know it was a egg sack, to me it was just one heck of a big spider. I was so scared to walk under the door that I just set there crying and screaming to mom. She heard me screaming and thought a snake had got me!
When I was about six years old and moved next door to our brand new house, grandma finally built a bathroom in her house and finally had running water to it and her kitchen. No more outhouse and no more drawing drinking water from the well.

I confess that I, at a very tender age, experienced the dreaded "winter goose" that arrives when the pyramid freezes. At those cold temperatures, lime does not help.
I also recall that we had a gent (johnny) who not only cleaned out your outhouse for a fee, but was the local gravedigger and would also clean out your dug well of dead cats and possums when the water level got low enough. he was sort of a friend of mine and gave me his old "field and stream" magazines when he was done with them.
I noticed by observing him at his various tasks while running my paper route, that he only owned one pair of rubber boots, which he used on ALL of his jobs, but I never mentioned it to anyone, because if he had lost any work, he might not have been able to afford his "field and stream" subscription any more....... ....Joe

Today I was watching a show called Alaska Frontier, I think. They had an episode about the outhouse. It seems that in really cold weather a frozen stalactite builds up directly under the hole. After a while it becomes intrusive. If this happens when you have a 2 holer, you just use the other one. I have experienced this in my own outhouse, although not to the point of intrusiveness. I do wish I had put in 2 holes when I built mine. Who knew?

I think you mean a frozen stalagmite. Stalactites hang from the ceiling, stalagmites arise from the floor.

Mrs Swirtz,
More important to remember which end of the stick you are using for that purpose.
65284,
You are correct. Sorry, senior moment. Could the outhouse have been in Australia?

When I was in college in Fairbanks Alaska, friends had an outhouse all dolled up: There were Christmas lights all along the path so you could see the moose in the way, and the seat hung on the inside of the back door, covered in fake fur (washable, you know!) so you didn't stick to the seat at 65* below zero! Don't forget to take it outside with you...

Personally I thik it's a lot of overkill when officials are involve in things like this especially since he is 3/4 mile off the road, can not even be seen from the road and no neighbors.I'm sure some of you will think it's justified but to me it just intrusive. People fail to realize the constitution affords us liberty, even the liberty to be stupid if we so desire.
