Or maybe like some pipe? Outside measurement not inside? LOL!

Dear Brenda,
Thank you for contacting us.
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. The crock insert capacity is measured by the amount of quarts of food, rather than liquid, that it can fit to the top brim.
Design suggestions and comments do not go unnoticed. We will forward your comments to the appropriate individual for consideration.
Thank you again for contacting Hamilton Beach Brands, Inc. Please let us know if we can further assist you.

And that is exsatly what I posted in the first place. Dry measuring instead of liquids. Yuppers that was it. And seeing nobody took up my challenge to go and measure theirs I would think most already knew something was up. If it did hold what it said it wed rim level and you could never be using it like that in the first place.

Is there a standard 'food dry weight measurement' that compares it to volume? (I personally don't believe there is one.)
I ask because quarts by definition is volume, ounces is weight.
If you put 128 ounces of flour in a slow cooker, it would have to be the volume of 8 quarts.
If you put 128 ounces of finely chopped meat in a slow cooker, it would have to be a volume of 4 quarts.

Most cooks cook by volume, experienced bakers bake by weights. I'm surprised that a company that is most likely producing a slow cooker for cooking isn't talking about volume.

Let me chime in here. A quart is a measure of volume. Most people think of a quart as being used to measure fluid but it doesn't have to be.
I'm willing to bet if you call them you will discover the 3 quart measurement is the entire volume inside the cooker with the lid on. IOW, they are measuring the entire volume of the inside of the cooker, not the volume the crock will hold.
Well I should have read the entire thread before posting. . .

Cause a lot of people and that is what we are talking about here the average home maker, not a professional cook, do not know that much about Volume.
That is why a package of cereal says Sold By WEIGHT, not by Volume.
And even if said slow cooker did have the capacity of 5 quarts to the rim, nobody in their right mind would be using it as it would cook over, and ran over the sides. That is why they say 3/4 Full of water and no more, but fill it over the half way. They are not taking about measurements in quarts then, But There you Have your Volume your talking about--- 3/4 full.~ LOL

If the average cook follows a set of instructions it will be to measure the ingredients not weigh them with a scale. Most will have several options to measure volume.

yes it IS made in CHINA...you are correct there..checked the label.
I still don't feel there is anyway you could fit 3 quarts of ANYTHING inside that crock even with lid on..and they said in their letter "crock insert capacity"..
so I still feel it was false advertising..and they know how I feel..but it still will be useful for me.
right now the same store has a 5 quart ..different brand ...on sale for just a couple $ more..I think I might get one..open the box and look in first..for when I want a larger meal..still only 2 or 3 of us eat at most meals so I don't need to use a larger one..although I have 2 much larger ones..they don't work as well as the smaller ones for me.

Interesting. And further more, a quart jar isn't a quart jar. I've taken a regular mouth quart jar and poured it into a wide mouth and guess which one was larger? Can't do the reverse, it didn't fit. Older jars seemed to be larger, depending on their brand. Like lumber....

Jan--I measured my pint jars, and to the top, my Ball and Kerr wide mouth jars are 1/2 inch different in height and both hold exactly 16 ounces to the top. Weird!
Brenda--it might have to do with Brand too. I have a Rival 4 quart model 3104 slow cooker decorated with Green Bay Packers emblems. I measured it's capacity by volume, it holds exactly 4 quarts (I measured using full to the top pint canning jars, which were measured as well). It was full and there was a higher ridge to the top of about 3/4 of an inch--so it could have held even more.
