ANd i have been doing it for years, only not mixing it just using drain oil. Especially when I worked at a horse boarding stable in AZ, I coated a lot of wood in the stalls so the horses would quit chewing the place down.

That's a primo treatment for wooden wagon and truck beds/grain sides/cattle racks.

Why would you wish for someone to dump paint thinner on your property?

I would have nothing to do with any "neighbor" who accused me of defacing their property especially without any proof.

Sometimes you are around something so much you kind of forget about it till something rings your bell. Well, up till now I failed to remember that dad always saved used motor oil to keep his shovels, rakes, hoes and things from rusting. He would get a 5 gal bucket of sawdust and put oil in it,mixed up good and when he was finished with a tool, clean it up and store it in the bucket. He also had oiled rags to put over the tools that this was not convenient to do.

If you have an asphalt road by your place , you are getting oil contamination every time it rains.

I don't suggest accusing the neighbors, either covertly or overtly. You could get a very bad reaction. If it is motor oil don't even worry about it. In fact, don't worry about it anyway, whatever it is. Just live your life and try not to irritate other people. Life is too short to worry about what someone else throws in your ditch. Waite a minute, where do all those beer cans and bottles come from in my ditch?

We still use our old oils along our fence lines. Doesn't quite last all year; the weeds come back so the oil must not be too devastating. We certainly haven't noticed any change or contamination in our well water. Old oil has been used along the fence lines here for many years. If it was a small oil dump, while it is an aggravation (illegal dumping always is), I wouldn't worry about it too much. What would worry me more is the paper and other stuff being dumped, just because it doesn't look nice.

Around here we can get some Honey Locust fence posts and I have a 30 gallon barrel with old oil I soak the bottom of the posts for about a week and stand them on a tarp in the old shed until I need them , They last a long time .
