If you are looking for ideal crop placement within your garden, I think your best bet would be "How To Grow More Vegetables Than You Ever Thought Possible On Less Land Than You Can Imagine" by John Jeavons. Really, really good.

If you're looking for best placement on your property as a whole, I would be the worst person to ask. Right now, I really need to move a rose bush, chives, sage plant, cone flowers and quite a few iris bulbs. The sycamore tree grew and shaded out everything right in front of the porch. Imagine that?!?

Country Women..by Sherry Thomas..this is a large book. Not "related" in any way to the magazine by the same name. It is probably out of print but you can find it on line. Can't believe The Whole Earth Catalog is selling at such a high price. Guess I will keep mine a little longer. Good Luck in your search !!

"The Have More Plan" is wonderful for planning and gives a lot of info on how to layout your homestead. Here's a link to the PDF version so you don't have to buy the book and Page 7 of the book shows diagrams of setups:

The pictures from The Have More Plan are the same as the ones in The Backyard Homestead- I guess the backyard homestead borrowed them!

I have The Self Sufficient Life book. I really like it, it has really great illustrations and lots of detailed layout pictures.

I also have the self-sufficient life and backyard homestead plus many others including RD Back to basics. I like the RD best but I like all of them. I still have a problem figuring out where to put things though.

I bought the RD Back to Basics after reading this thread. We have most of the other books mentioned. I have to say that we are super impressed by this book; this is by far the best book in our collection for our particular lifestyle.
