Could this be a railroad jack? If so it would only need to lift an inch or so since rail cars have no suspension.

JG There is a spring, if it laid flat, it would look like a 1in thereabouts circle with 3 coils, The bottom end came out around 2in and had a hook that attached to a stob sticking out of the back dog pawl. The top end came out at the top around 1/4in and bent hard right 1/8in. That 1/8th in fit into a tiny hole in the bolt that the fog pawl fitted in. turning that bolt counterclockwise put pressure on the spring that was held back from going round with the bolt. When as much pressure as my DSIL could muster was put on, I tightened it BUT I had to hold up the handle also while he used 2 hands to do what he did.

A spring with only three coils? Must be made from some very heavy stock to have enough resistance to do much of anything. So you had to tighten the bolt to stretch the spring out? Pretty neat that they designed and built in a way to compensate for a spring that gets stretched out and weakens over time, rather than just having to replace the spring.

Well, if you can picture the spring it helps. The coils go around the bolt. The bottom comes out and away from the coils and hooks onto the back dog pawl. The top comes out a tiny bit and fits into a tiny hole in the head of the bolt. IF the bottom end is held by the pawl, and the top by the hole in the bolt head, and you turn the bolt, you either tighten or loosen the spring. Yup. Pretty neat,
