Rocks. My elders used rock pyramids, rock jacks and rock walls to delineate property corners, lines and heavy forest lines. Of course, they had abundant material and child labor to move the rocks.

To the OP, good luck on marking those boundries, that looks like a mess and a half...lol
Get a good Suunto surveyors compass. Very accurate.

I had posts like these on the corners of my last property, along side a buried metal stake that could be picked up with a metal detector in case the post got removed. The posts also hat the lat-long engraved in them.. .No idea who put them in, but I liked them...

whatever you do, if you get your place survey'ed, don't 'waste' it by not marking it well.

my hubs was very adamant about not putting in posts, as it would make haying the area a pain. our land boundary is in the hayfield next door, and they 've hayed it for years, we've not gotten anything from it. i didn't plan to stop that even, just mark it since we'd paid for the survey. and, cut some of that hay for my goats.

so now, if we really wanted the boundaries, we'd have to re do the survey. and that's not cheap. the guy who does the farming around us is a kindly older man whom i am very fond. but, he's pretty old and it won't be long til its rented to another. at that point i am not so sure i want them using our drive (its ours and fields can be accessed on the other side of the section directly off the road) or using/keeping our hay. its not much,, but enough for my goats. so having those borders would be pretty great. too bad they're lost.

As a licensed surveyor a couple ideas come to mind.

If some corners are at risk of being wiped out either from construction or nasty neighbors, have the surveyor “tie the corner out”. This consists of a serious of accurate measurements to nearby natural or set objects that can be used to reset the corner at a later time. One method is to set and measure 2 additional points in line with the corner in a safe area. When the corner needs to be reset it is simple task of setting up on a remaining monument, sight the second and place the corner at the recorded distance.

Consider upgrading some of the corners with more substantial monuments such as concrete, 2” iron pipe or Cast Iron Monuments. Not all corners would need this but your surveyor would know of critical corners such as starting point for descriptions or if they are difficult to traverse through that would merit this treatment.

Traffic marking paint is good for marking posts as it lasts a long time, is commonly available and inexpensive.

On my own property the tops of line posts are color coded
North boundary –blue
South boundary – gray
West boundary – white
East boundary – yellow

It is easy for family and visitors to learn the code and if they get lost in the woods and come to a line fence they know how to follow the line to get home. This may not be as useful with your odd shape but a variation may still be useful.
