Here's a little more info from The Daily Rx http://www.americanpreppersnetwork.net/index.php

"The four brands that exceeded the standard were Salsa Picante de Chile Habanero, Salsa Habanero, El Pato, Salsa Picante Hot Sauce, and Bufalo Salsa Clasica."

"The researchers then looked at the lead content of hot sauce bottle lid by color (green, orange, red, yellow and white). They found that all three of the green lids and six out of the nine red lids exceeded the standard for lead in packaging materials set by the FDA (7 mg/kg)."

"The study authors noted the presence of salt and hot peppers as the main ingredients in these hot sauces is what is likely responsible for their higher than normal lead content."

Another site suggested moderation, that we don't need to eat hot sauce with every meal.

With eggs at breakfast, on the hamburger for lunch, in the enchiladas for dinner. RATS! I'm gonna have withdrawal!

I eat one of the 'brands', Yucateca Habanero XXX sauce. I guarantee you (and I rarely make guarantees) that if you weren't a pepper head first, you'd die of the hot sauce before you did the traces of lead. I know an old gal up in Alaska that literally passed out after eating some, her friend had to rush and get an 'epi-pen', she'd went into shock.

I can eat the stuff, but more than a teaspoon at a time, and I'm one hurtin puppy... [frame of reference, I do shots of tabasco and similar sauces such as srirachi... I keep a bottle or three on my coffee table, so I can reach over and drink some every hour or so, to 'brighten' myself up.]

Ha! I am on a first name basis with the UPS guy and got a package today with some trim pieces for one of my old Dodge trucks. Even though I knew what was coming its like opening a Birthday gift or something.

I would have to somewhat agree with Andrei on that JTBrandt... A lot of the agriculture in Mexico is more natural grown.... at the prices that they sell their stuff they have to minimize expenses. Of course they have to use pesticides for the commodity to be able to cross the inspection at the border....

One hardly ever finds fresh fruit grown in this country anymore, at least at a supermarket.

Yep, my vanilla beans are from Mexico.

Oh yeah, I think the worm in the bottle may be from there too.

We transport 20 ft containers filled w/ Chinese canned fruits & veg, Sometimes I see the large commercial size cans being re-labeled. Made me stop thinking of eating green beans out ever again.

If you ever get the chance try pineapple fanta from Mexico/Central America! It's almost like eating the fruit.

Marie Sharps hot sauce is my 1st choice. Made in Belize and I don't really care what's in it. Yum!
I think good/thoughtful cooks in ANY country care what they are serving and are careful when choosing ingredients.

Nope, but I've seen with my own eyes the chemicals many Mexican farmers spray liberally and without calibration on their crops...some that are banned in the U.S.

I only entered this thread to correct what I believe from my own experience to be misinformation. I have personally witnessed Mexican farmers spraying ag chemicals that are banned in the United States...heptachlor, chlordane, aldrin, parathion, and others that are not banned but were sprayed without any careful measurements.

If you think I am wrong you can can post proof that Mexican agriculture is more "natural" than American agriculture. It's an incredibly broad and subjective statement, so good luck with that.

By choice I work in US agriculture as a beekeeper and I see how flowers are being sprayed while bees are pollinating and being poisoned. I see miles and miles of orchard ground that have no ants alive. I see miles and miles of flowers with no butterfly's.
On the other side of the border I drive and my windshield gets full of insects and that is a good sign. I see fruits with blemishes that show that insects are present and do what is natural to them.
Most likely you have seen some Mexican farm worker using chemicals the way he was instructed to do but I have the belief it is an isolated case only by looking at the total environment.

I believe you have anecdotal examples. Sorry, but I have to agree w/ Brandt.

Now the local grown crops will likely be much cleaner, but the crops grown for export to the USA will have greater pesticide use, because american consumers will not accept 'blemished' fruits/vegs.

But getting back to my original topic, the problem is much more with processed foods from MExico than even raw /fresh items.

COmpared to CHina however, They are undoubtedly much safer, though that is not saying much.

At what company do you see the labeling?
I have heard of beekeepers purchasing Chinese honey by the 55 gall drums and feed it to their bees and then harvested as US honey.

What is this cola y'all speak of? Is it Coca cola brand? or just a cola you have found at the market or Big Lots? I have a Big Lots here with pretty good food section.
