Ah, the traffic circles in Augusta, don't miss those. Who ever thought a 2 lane traffic circle was going to be anything but a death trap? I got my undergrad degree form UMA, commuting from the coast, have conveniently blocked that memory from my mind, not to mention driving Route 17 in the ice and snow after dark. Pulling off the road in a line of cars waiting for the sand truck to go by.
I also have to resurrect the comment about parka's after 7 pm! I was always freezing as a kid after dark. One of my dreams was to move somewhere were it was warm on summer nights, that seemed so exotic. I was out on the islands as a kid though, so a bit cooler, 40's in the mornings in the summer.
Have been loving this whole discussion! Makes me homesick.

LOL the humane societies have no room for more animals....I seriously don't fear any repercussions of "frontlining" my dogs or cats....one mention of people dousing their animals with kerosene to rid them of bugs to be "legal" should bring any animal rights person to the senses....its beyond ridiculous. Most of the time when I catch a stray dog it days before I even hear from the animal control officer, let alone come to collect the animal.
And yes I've eaten at both places but not for a long time(money is scarce these days). Not only is the food wonderful at both places, the people who own those places do a lot of charity work through their businesses! Really good generous people. the Dine-ah is about 6m from home and the barn is 10-12(the other side of China Lake and Webber Pond)
Interestingly enough, the new hannaford in Augusta at Cony Hill, has a "garden roof" and sort of built into the hill---someone wanted to buy some of my goats and put them on the roof as a joke! ( I refused, not on the grounds of animal cruelty, but I did not want to be implicated ) in the hoax!)

I do not think so. Most of I-95 in Maine is not toll. Just that short section down South in the Boston suburbs.
I-95 in Maine is 303 miles long. 43 miles of that is toll-road. Less than 1/7th. The toll section is entirely down in the extreme Southern end of the state near NH.
The Golden Road is the other toll-road in Maine, and that is over 100 miles long. But that is up in Maine.
BigHenTinyBrain - Have you ever visited Maine? Not the urban Northern Mass area, but Maine?
It truly does not sound like you have ever been to Maine.

I don't think I have ever been to Woolwich. Map shows it next to Bath, is it as urban as Bath?
I generally avoid the cities.

No it didn't seem to be. like i said i don't live in Maine but my family tree on my mom's side is up there.
two months ago I drove my mom(from NC) and aunt (who lives in Augusta) to Bath so they could see where they lived when my Grandpa worked at the shipyard during the war. Then we went and ate at the Taste of Maine then we drove to Weeks Mills where my Grandpa had had a farm and on to Erskine Academy where my aunt had gone to school. visited my uncle and aunt and two cousins graves across the street and went to visited my other cousin (former fire chef) who lives on one of the lakes never south China. can't remember which one.
What I can tell you is that it is a very nice place to visit and most likely to live if you don't breed animals.

ET1- why so hostile? I'm not interested in a who's-more-rural contest! What did I say that got your panties in a wad?
In defense of rotaries- I have always liked them... given they are large enough in diameter and single lane. However, too small rotaries or two lane rotaries are dangerous. There is one in Augusta that is terrifyingly confusing.

I am not a native to Maine. I find it disturbing when people tell others about Maine, and give false statements of Maine.
Saying that most of I-95 is toll road is false. I knew that it was false, it took me a bit to look up the data and present it.
If a person's impression of Maine is that most of I-95 is toll road, clearly that person has never left that tiny 1/7 section of the state.
Most of Maine is rural.
I am happy that you have enjoyed your visits to Southern Maine. There are many people who seem to enjoy that urban corner of the state.

ET1- I'm sorry if it seemed like I said most of 95 is tolls. The person that brought it up was only going to Augusta, so in that case 100% of the part of 95 they used was a toll road. The most travelled part of 95 IS a toll road... and I've never had to use it above Bangor, so I don't really know much about it at that point. I'm a fan of alternate routes. As I said, it is often easy to avoid using the southern portion of 95... although if you are driving from a southern state and going to Augusta then 95 is really the easiest choice, tolls and all.
You are responding in a really unpleasant manner, and honestly seem determined to put down a whole lot of a state you are not originally from. Why? Is there something offensive to you about people living in a more populous part of a very large state? I understand a dislike of tourists, but it sounds like you live well beyond the heavily travelled parts of the state, and I'm not a tourist anyways.
If it's important to you, I live in a UT near the south western Canadian border. Not exactly the tiny lower 1/7th of the state, or the "city" either, but not the County. Clearly you are north of me, which gives you the satisfaction of... well, living north of me, I guess. I'm not trying to give any false statements about Maine, in fact I feel that I'm making statements to defend the positive aspects of Maine and be realistic about the bugs. You may want to go back and read ALL of my posts in this thread- if you feel that I've disparaged the state elsewhere, I'd like to know.
Further, if you really want to be snotty in your replies I'd suggest switching to PM. I doubt anybody else wants to hear you insult me or my portion of Maine. You're not giving us Mainers a very good image.

I do apologize.
When you said that most of I-95 was toll, that was what I thought you meant to say. Clearly I misunderstood.
