I am an HVAC tech, I worry about the weather more than the economy, but the economy matters. When times are good, I sell more equipment. When times are bad, I do more expensive repairs. We make money either way, but I prefer it when my customers are feeling flush.

My Father in law runs an auto salvage business. When times are good, usually commodity prices are high, and he does well crushing cars for scrap. When times are bad, more people buy used parts, and he still has a stockpile of scrap for when things pick up.

I chuckle when I hear government workers gripe about the economy. Once in a long while the real economy intrudes on their worker's paradise, and I am supposed to feel sorry for them!

Independent car repair shop.
People are keeping their cars longer and have to get them repaired.
Also Auto Parts places.
Same thing goes for them, as people keeping their cars longer they need auto parts other then going to a dealership one.

no one, or job, is safe. Just be thankful when your fortune is good and remember in the good times that bad times are on the way sooner or later.

Repo work. In the recession there is always a lot of chattle that needs to be picked up. Also bounty hunting, skip tracing and process serving.
MOST of all and I am surprised no one here ahs mentioned this EGGS or selling YOUR CROPS???? Buy sell or trade.

I work in the food industry and was able to pick from three positions within a week of leaving my old job (worked in restaurant/food service management for several years). So many people, especially those my age, just don't know how to cook, so there is some security in it.

The best I know of in Texas is hvac, when it hits 105 outside people want their AC working at almost any cost. And with so many folks moving into the state there's an ever increasing number of AC units. I heard a company advertising on the radio a signing bonus for experienced hvac techs. It does involve climbing into and working in 140 degree attics doing residential though.

IT work is good here as well, if you are certified in microsoft/cisco/unix you have a pick of a lot of good jobs around any of the Texas metros.

When I'm done setting up my shop I'll be putting out a shingle fo rlow cost car/truck/tractor/etc repair, and as I'm an electronics tech I have a shop inside as well where I fix TV and stereo.

Dunno how well those two will work out, but I'm hedging by getting my place paid off quick, probably enough solar to get my light bill next to nothing and getting my cost of living comfortably month to month down to below what most see as poverty level so I won't need much income at all. Between repairing folks stuff and raising some livestock and such I'm hoping I can avoid having to have a regular job.

Right now - anything in the building genre. : / But there were still plenty
of new homes going in here before the recent rash of tornadoes.
ESPECIALLY!! Tornado shelter installers. Many places have a 8-12 mo wait!! Folks are desperate.

Honestly I think too many employers are freaked out about Obamacare costs. I've seen the California estimates...it's not that high currently as a city employee, my wife has $250 a month taken out of her paycheck that covers however many kids we have and us both. In our case, it's 4 people. I think we have a really good deal going.

I'd say mechanics. The more people are squeezing their dollars, the more things get repaired rather than replaced.

Pulling weeds........ hands down.

The job foreman says he doesn't care how bad Bernanke and his band of merry men screw things up, there will always be weeds to pull.

Yeah. We always thought that. My husband is the best mechanic in the county. Used to be the driveway was always full, now business is at a trickle, and we are really suffering as a result.

Nurses, truck drivers, welders, electricians, and plumbers. Builders seem to have a good business lately, too, with all of the people moving into the area.

It's booming around here. Too bad most everything is unionized, aka slack off once you're in because they can't fire you! :/

Jobs suck.
Work for yourself. A boss is the most expensive and unaffordable luxury most people ever invest in, and the best one in the world is not much better than the worst. he can't help it, either. It's in his "job description", and beyond his control.

When he's doing his job properly, he's buying your time for $10 per hour and selling it for $30. You are a heck of a lot better off selling direct for $20 to the customer and pocketing the difference against hard times, 'cause when your boss has hard times, you get sent home with nothing. Again, not his fault. part of his job, and it's your own fault for going along with the plan.

Again, jobs suck. If you can afford a boss, you are a better scrimper than me....Joe
