Having an unloaded shotgun, that is cased in your car's truck, isn't going to offer you much protection as you travel alone.
I know. And MN and WI do not honor conceal and carry permits from SD. I just figure it would better than having nothing at all.

"Not withstanding" is legalese for this statute over rides State, county, municipal laws.

Underline is mine. Note the place in vehicle restrictions.

Also, I CARRY a copy of the federal statute WITH ME when I travel, in case you have to educate an ignorant local cop of the law........because they are not lawyers. Might save you a spell in the local pokey and the fight to get your firearms back.
Sadly, one place this doesn't work.. Washington DC... It matters not if you are just passing through. If you have a gun and get caught, even unloaded in the trunk in a locked case, you will be going to jail... There have been quite a few just passing through that ended up in jail..

If there are no kids that could get into the gun, then keep it unloaded and cased on the front seat if that's leagal. Keep the ammunition close too. In a bad situation you may not have time to load the gun and do any good but there may be times when you can. If you are leagally transporting the gun, a LEO can not arrest you.

It doesn't sound like you will be camping where there are other campers so your chances of shooting one are slim. You always have to keep your cool and be sure of your target before you fire.

Most black bear encounters don't occur where the bear goes into a tent unless the camper has taken food into the tent (the smell lingers after the food is gone). You can load the shotgun magazine but not the chamber and it will be safe in a tent. I would carry it with me on the private land but not public land. You are more likely to get on the wrong side of a bear when you are out running around.

A shotgun with any hunting shell will kill a black bear if you are close enough. I take it that you are only shooting if the bear is close and headed at you.

I'd be more worried about drunk campers than black bear.. Believe me.. A black bear will want to run from you before you'll want to run from it..

I believe, if you will check, "not withstanding," means that any state or municipality can not lessen the requirements of this law. They can still add to it.

It is almost impossible to carry a gun through Illinois legally. One law states that guns can't be available in the passenger compartment where they are reachable. There is another law which says they can't be concealed... which includes having them in the trunk, under or behind the seat, or anyplace where they can't readily be seen.

I lived and carried guns in IL all the time.. You can carry them in a trunk. You can carry them in your pick up cab, so long as they are in a locked case...

The difference between a grizzly and a black bear is about like the difference between a rat terrier and a full grown wolf.

Almost any offensive action, such as whacking it with a club, will usually deter a black bear. Almost nothing will deter a charging mad grizzly, including most guns.

Thank you for explaining the difference. I live among both species.

That is not true if you are actually attacked by a black bear which is unusual. A griz is more irritable but will bluff charge and can be deterred by playing dead because it sees you as a threat and once the threat evaporates will often leave you alone.
If a black comes after you to kill you, he is may likely be seeing you as dinner and playing dead will get you killed.
I have a friend here whose best friend was killed and partially consumed by black bear attacks.
Here is a clip by renowned bear expert, Stephen Herrero about black bears:

Bear spray can and does repel charging grizzlies as does a well placed shot with the right gun. I opt to carry bear spray because I'd be too busy peeing my pants to take careful aim.
