I like them, didn't get but a few last year because the deer kept eating the vines off. Never even tried any this year, too dry here for much to grow right now.

My thoughts? "YUMMY".

We cut them up along with other root veggies and toss them with olive oil, salt, pepper, cumin, and coriander. then bake in the oven at 400 F; don't crowd them. Yummy.

I think I read somewhere that of all the major sources of starch that are consumed world wide (corn, wheat, rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc), sweet potatoes are by far the healthiest.

We have deer, so I haven't had much luck growing them for the same reasons others have mentioned (eating of the leaves)...

Sorry Bywaterdog, but the Gilmer TX Yamboree has been going on since 1935. It is a huge event. School was shut down Thursday and Friday. Really the whole town shuts down. It is HUGE! Yes, I grew up there. www.yamboree.com

I will give you my nieces reaction to sweet potatoes, she was 4 or 5 in the early 1980's when she said this "Orange taters? Rude me out!"

No growing experience here and I only had them as patties growing up. DH and I (now) love sweet taters, mashed, casseroles, and pies. I tried them fried once a few years back when we went out to eat, ~yuck~ didn't like. Just recently DH has had swallowing issues and asked me to fry some for him. So I made a skillet full and I tried again, and awesome! I love them that way now too! **as if "I" really needed more things to eat, lol.
Adding another benefit for us of the yummy, and good for you sweet tater. DH has throat cancer now and a feeding tube, since June 6th (nothing by mouth). Just last night I fixed him a blendered sweet tater as his very 1st real food via his tube! He was thrilled!!! It's a staple food for us.
