Sounds like you want to give up 1 decient paying fulltime job for 2 poor paying fulltime jobs.

Pick one to concentrate on it.

Here is how I see it and what I would do if that were my dream.

1. Gather all of your local farmers/producers first to see if they are interested in your dream also. I would NOT give up your main income. Maybe only open the grocery on the weekends or mid week, specific days instead every day.

2. Create shifts so each participating farmer or spouse or representative works at the store. This gives them an opportunity to meet their customers and toot their own horn.

3. Create ever changing photo opportunities so your wife can make money while overseeing the store (as your representative). For instance, Christmas time, photos with Santa. Summer time, special setups for photos with their pets.

4. Get with a lawyer and set up an LLC so your farm is not at risk.

5. Do not quit your good day job.

6. Create a carnival atmosphere the days your store is open. Make it special for the customers and give them reasons for visiting.

7. Create a good display of old time candy for sale. Find other niche items that will create foot traffic. The more variety, the more you will create the want for them to visit on the days you are open. Even good crafts, used books, fleece and stuff like that. Keep it to a minimum, don't make it overfilled and trashy. Maybe a display area for a florist to teach a class, a gardener to teach how to grow a garden, etc.

8. Many opportunities, but your major income, I would not ever give up.

9. Do not follow other examples of stores, you are bucking the trend and need to create the need for them to visit.

Don't stick to just retail, get some wholesale accounts lined up. And don't spend all your time consumed with the farm, focus 110% on the business. Use the farm as your marketing tool. Also prepare to kiss any social or personal life goodbye. Try getting up at 5:30am work all day until 6-7pm go home go to sleep. Wake up, rinse wash repeat. Maybe make money no gaurentee . Welcome to owning your own business .

Thanks to all with constructive posts. Cant help but laugh at the ones who say I would lose my wife, my house, etc. Dont see how it is possible to be personally liable financially and if my wife would divorce me over money I wouldnt have married her in the first place.

To the people who ask how much I produce now...I cant say for sure since I just moved here and I am not familiar with exactly how things will go. The soil seems excellent and I have very healthy grass. In my last house I produced way more than my family could ever eat and saved plenty as well. Gave away most of it. I have much more room here and better equipment now so I am thinking a year or more canned is going to be no problem. Like I said, this is not something I plan on doing tomorrow, so we will see what this years crops give me and go from there.
