Our end goal is self sufficiency. We want chickens, cows, horses, sheep, garden, orchard and a place for the kids to experience nature. We can't possibly afford to just jump in and do it all at once, plus that just seems like a disaster waiting to happen when we have zero experience with any of it.

Start with the compost pile. A good project for the children to learn how that thing works. Then add chickens, they will work out well with the compost pile. General fix up will have it's own demands too.

Start with a one acre homestead. We started with pots on a balcony and then on to a yard and then a half acre until we got it right and then we expanded. Mother Earth news has a plan that you can google "mother earth news one acre homestead"and there are others as well.

If you have never done this before or done any practicing you can start with parts of the one acre plan. We "practiced" for years learning what we could by working weekends and holidays on farms, orchards, vineyards and greenhouses. If you are living in the country you can get to know your neighbours and volunteer work in exchange for knowledge.
