Bob... It sounds like you've had quite a bit of experience with inconsiderate neighbors. I just made my dogs come inside 5 mins. ago because they were barking at the kids next door on the trampoline. I used to have some neighbors that played their music WAY too loud. After a 3hr concert of chinese opera music while they were trying to sleep off their hangovers on a Sun morning, they got the message! :haha: They turned down their music & I quit playing mine at an annoying level too. I believe in keeping my dogs on my property, not letting them annoy the neighbors too much, & doing my best to do unto others as I would have them do unto me. Sometimes it's hard.

You got that right. We have had obnoxious animal lovers for neighbors our whole lives. I have been threatened and almost bitten, thank goodnes I now use a cane, numerous times by various neighbors dogs on our property. That should never happen.

I have been bitten numerous (about 20) times on public property, where a dog is not supposed to be running free, but when I complained nothing was ever done. It seems the dogs have the rights and the humans are SOL. People would say things like you must have provoked him, he never bit anyone before. In many cases I was not even aware the dog was anywhere near me, so I don't think I provoked him .Many times however,I have found out later the animal has a long history of biting, and nothing is ever done about it.

My wife was bitten once at a house near ours. She had gone there to get something. When my wife asked if the dog had its shots the lady laughed and said, "oh no one around here does that". A person like her should not be allowed to own a dog, because it is obviious she is not at all responsible for the animal. It is not the animals fault in most cases, it is the owners.

Yes I got a thing about dogs, but if you had lived my life with @#$% people who own dogs, you would probably respond in the same way.

If you are bitten by an animal and don't absolutely, positively insist on the animal being tested for rabies you are basically risking your life on it not having rabies. The animal should at least be quanantined at a humane society shelter or vet clinic to be observed for signs of rabies. I don't know they have to kill the animal to test.

If it is determined the animal possibly has rabies there is now a procedure for rabies preventive shots. However, if you actually contract rabies there is no cure and I understand it is a pretty painful way to die.

I don't know what the reporting procedure would be. Possibly filing a police report and then insisting the county health department take action. If nothing is done, and rabies is contracted, at least you (well, your surviving relatives) have documentation.

Ken, most of the incidents were years ago, and all but one animal had had its shots according to the owners. I know we were lucky that nothing really bad happened to any of our family because of this. However,Doctors cost money and for quite a while we had no insurance.

Knowing what I know now things would have been done very differently.

Now that we had to move to town, there are still obnoxious animals whose owners are worse than their pets. We deal with it differently now. If someone elses' animal comes into our yard we just call the local humane society, that is what the police said to do. The humane society comes out and talks to the owners about keeping the dog under control. If the dog comes over again and the humane society is called the owner is fined $175. The idiots across the street have shelled out $350 because of us. Maybe more because of others, either way the dog is watched much better now, the way it should have always been.

The police said their number one call is dog related that is why they moved jurisdiction of the problem to the humane society, If they hadn't they would not have had the time to do anything else. (That says volumes about some pet owners).

Bob, I can certainly see how you have a problem with dogs running loose. I've been bitten a few times myself. The last time was a few years ago when I stopped my neighbor's 140lb Akita from trying to kill my 13yr old dog in my yard. His dog had jumped the fence & attacked my old female. When I heard the commotion I ran outside & pulled his dog off Dixie. His dog bit me in the chest just below my right sholder, but I didn't even notice it right then. I was so angry & hyped up that I grabbed a hoe & was planning on killing that dog. Unfortunately it jumped back over its yard before I had a chance to do anything but chase it. About then, my neighbor came out to see me brandishing a hoe, yelling cuss words at his dog, & with blood streaming down my bare chest. His first reaction was to check his dog to see if it had been hurt. I guess it was the natural thing for him to do, because I was busy checking Dixie. She was pretty chewed up,& it was obivious that I needed medical attention too. My wife & sons took her to the vet & my daughter took me to the ER. We both got stitches & we both healed up. Since my neighbor & I had been on very good terms prior to this unfortunate incident, I declined his offer to pay for the vet bill & the medical expenses, but I informed him that the next time I saw his dog anywhere outside his yard I intended to kill it. He got rid of the dog that week by giving it to someone farther out of town, but needless to say, this pretty much ended a 9yr friendship. He moved away several months later. The point to this long, drawn out tale of woe, is that his dog had gotten out several times before & attacked other animals. He had been keeping it on a chain, but he had carelessly forgotten to do so on this occasion. Dogs will bite & bark at intruders & that is one of the main reasons that most people keep them. However, responsible people take approiate measures to confine & control their dogs at all times. Mine remain in the house when I'm not at home or asleep, & are let outside only when someone from the family is there to supervise them. I wish that everyone would adopt this practice
