I started my 5 in a cardboard box and then moved them to a dog cage when they outgrew the box. We had to let them out of the dog cage for exercise, but it kept them out of trouble at night. They are 8 weeks old and we just moved them out to their newly built henhouse today. I would try two boxes at least, tho. they need at least 6 sq. inches each. That would be 12 1/2 sq. feet minimum for you to house 25. I am thinking of ordering 25 more and putting them in a refrigerator box. I am not sure tho. I could keep them separated for the first two weeks. They don't start trying to establish pecking order until they are three weeks old, so you could get away with splitting them up at first. They should be together after 2 weeks old tho, or you will have conflict when you introduce them. I like the swimming pool idea that someone gave and also the playpen idea. I think both of those would give you the square footage that you need. good luck to you. I hope you enjoy your chicks!

Wife and I live off grid. We used some 2 foot wide aluminum flashing to make a oblong container for the chicks. Plastic on the floor and woodshavings on top of that. We covered it with a couple of boards. We used a Deirz "AIR PILOT" lantern for the heat (hung from the ceiling so it couldn't turn over). Worked like a charm. We didn't loose one chick.

Lots of good ideas here.
I use a kiddie pool with cardboard around the sides for a wind guard. I use plain old dirt in the bottom.
One thing about brooders, make sure the little ones have enough room to get away from the heat source if they need to.
