Here it would be an owl also...I've seen during snow times, there will be a trail with blood droppings here and there...the load became too heavy and they "landed" then regrouped, picked it up, and landed again and again until finally they left the remaining body minus the head...

I'm inclined to think it was an owl after reading more.
