They release juglune (spelling?) A toxin that kills almost every plant or trees by it. Roots and leaves have the highest concentration. The only plant I found to work with my walnut trees is tiger lillies. Best of luck on selecting nut tree's.
here is a link to a list of some plants that are tolerant of the juglone produced by walnut trees:

There are actually quite a few good options of other fruit and nut producing plants. Mulberry, chestnuts, hazelnuts (filberts), currants, black raspberries, and serviceberries (juneberries, saskatoons, etc...) would make a good buffer between the walnuts and other plants more sensitive to the juglone.

While your waiting on the trees to produce nuts you can plant peanuts and sunflowers..... sunflower butter is pretty tasty to.

Peanuts can be grown in tubs or bags and pulled inside when it's cold out just like potatoes can.

I have young (not producing yet) English walnut trees, Pecan trees and Hazelnut trees.
I can't WAIT for nuts!

Sunflower butter - great idea! We've been feeding all of last years sunflowers to the chicks.

I've decided on hazelnuts. They're extensively grown in Oregon, even though the commercial production is in the wet NW part of the state, I think they'll do well here. I bought a few pounds of hazelnuts, am munching on ones I roasted last night. made a great pesto with them too. Plan on throwing them in pasta this week. They're a little soft until you roast them.

DH is still non-committal, has pushed it off until next year, but I'll prevail

Anyways I figure they are great for hard times or if shtf.
Love the chestnuts but I only have one variety 5 trees ,and they pollinate. No others nearby that I know of. hmmmm! I wonder, only 3 of them had nuts last year.....
I have 4 barn cats that patrol for squirrels and chipmunks, aint seen one yet!
My dad gives me a box of hazelnuts every year and I keep them out in the garage by a workbench. Once a day I bust a couple with a hammer on the workbench. Low tech, but works.
