As soon as the ears go forward and the eyes fix on a bird, zap the dog. Don't wait until they're on the attack to zap them.
I never shock them unless they chase the birds.
I don't care if they LOOK at them

I don't see the point in correcting their just paying attention

There's no way I would set a body grip (conibear) trap on the ground. Doing that is just like planting a land mine and dangerous to anything small enough to stick it's head in the trap and you can be sued even if it's on your own property for creating a dangerous attractive nuisance. A better solution for coon is to use dog-proof coon traps baited with small marshmallows. Here's one style and brand. You can find them cheaper. http://www.huntsmart.com/Duke-Coon-T...FVSVMgodrRIA3A

I agree that the best solution is to coop the birds in a secure pen or building every night. That you can protect with wood and electric fencing.

In designing your fence to keep predators out, imagine it the other way around. imagine you are building a fence to keep fox and raccoons in. They can dig, climb and squeeze through small places. As you can see, given enough time, they will get through the fence.

A Conibear trap is a bit like a land mine for animals. It kills whatever goes into it. In my area, that isn't a concern. I've seen raccoons trip a live trap before they are completely inside and escape. They'll never enter another one.

Everyone says 1" fencing will keep mink out--will 1" x 2" work (thicker wire fencing already installed. Know it's mink.

Yes if the 1x2 mesh is stiff enough to not spread apart.

We live in five acres with goats and chicken
Planning on free range
I plan on a half acre highly secured fence
And rest moderately fenced
Will keep everything at night and while we are out within the secured area

The secured area will be predator proof
Using electric as well as wire fence
For ground I am planning to nail few strands of barbed wire nailed all along the fence outer side

Once I do it all I can post again - what did work and what didn't
