Welcome Matt and thank you so much for the service you gave our country.

You're getting great advice here. If I were in your shoes, I would want to know what the law is in the area you are contemplating moving to about homesteading, i.e. what are the legalities of building are, what the zoning is as to what you can legally do on your place and if there are any right-of-ways crossing your intended property. Property rights in one state is not always the same as in another!

I would definately take time to talk with people who live in and around the area you are looking at just to get a general "feel" of the community's character. As a vet you can probably sense this out pretty well. Talk with them about your specific place as to flooding, varments (types of snakes/spiders) and other wild life you might be contending with (bears, wolves, etc.). I would also find out if there are any facilities around that house people who might "accidentally" pose problems for you. (I personally would not want to live near a penitentiary or psychiatric hospital.)

As for the specific piece of land, I would walk all over it to see what I encountered, checking out the terrain, signs of water retention & what types of vegetation was growing on it.

Good luck in finding a spot you and yours will enjoy.

Again, I really appreciate all the kind words and welcome all the great advice. I will definitely keep the VA locations in mind. One question I do have for those of you that live in these areas(Midwest), I know this is Tornado Alley, but really how bad do you get hit. I lived near Lawton, OK when I was younger for 4 years and never even saw a Tornado, but they were never far from your mind. Thank all the vets that responded for your service as well, and take care all.

Matt

Unlike some other natural disasters, you usually have some warning with tornadoes When the weather is right, keep your head on a swivel, and have a plan. The odds say that any given place is about 1 in 4,000, even in tornado alley. Of course there are those who say if you live in a tornado magnet (mobile home) your odds are about 50/50.:-)
my smilies don't work either
