I go through a 100oz bottle a week at least. I wish I could buy a 5 gallon bucket inexpensively. If it were mine, Id keep it and use it, and share some with my mom

Not that I recommend it and someone smarter than me would have to confirm, but the Tide MIGHT be usable as a wetting agent for soil that doesn't absorb water easily, which is probably not a problem in PA. Personally, I'm in the Craigslist camp.

Wife says she can't tell a lick of difference in it and Tide from the store.
Runs 30 bucks per bucket. We fill used smaller plastic bottle to keep in by the washing machine. Figure out the price of a bottle of Tide from the store per gallon, and you'll see what a bargain 30 bucks/5 gallons is.
Based on that, your friend has about 1650 bucks worth of soap, less the cost of what ever containers it was put it.

There is a Tide-like detergent that is advertised on the wholesale market as "Tide Formula"
It is packaged in 5 gallon buckets and in large totes of 300 gallons. (I can't remember how many gallons are in those totes.)
Around here, the "Tide Formula" is sold for $45 per 5 gallons. People that I've talked to say that it is good stuff, but I don't see the value in it at $9 a gallon versus what I can buy from the store locally.

I'm curious how a customer would know the color is off?
When I buy a bottle I never take the top off to check the color.... And unless it was purple or green or something, I probably won't notice if it was a little lighter or darker...

If I really was set on pouring it on the grass, I'd at least have a really large slip'n slide as a means to spread it...

No need for any of that!
Every product has a bad batch, or sunlight can kill the color of laundry detergent. If this giant, 275 gallon tote was sitting out to be loaded for it's trip to the bottler too long, the color could easily be some cloudy green or something that a consumer won't check but WILL write a letter about or want a refund for.
The thief in the article was stealing bottles (probably sticking them under a coat or something) and re-selling them. He was not tossing a 275 gallon tote over his back and dashing off with it.
OP, I think re-selling it without any mention of brand is your best bet. You can buy a LOT of GOOD fertilizer with the money. Stuff that you know will actually work. Go ahead and throw a cup of it on a houseplant if you don't believe me that greywater is a world away from straight detergent, which will kill your plants, inside or out.
Salvage grocers specialize in that sort of thing, there's one by me, and if no-name detergent in milk jugs was on the shelves, it would be bought as fast as you could stack it out.

The video I watched on line showed that thieves are loading carts w large bottles of Tide and then just running out of the store with the cart, loading a waiting car and taking off. There is a black market resell value to these at nail salons and corner markets. There was video of a thief filling a cart and running out of a store, but then the same thief was on the security video of a nail salon selling it to them. Nail salons go through lots of towels and those all have to be washed. Corner mom & pop markets were buying the stolen Tide for $5 a bottle and reselling it for $25 a bottle. I got to thinking that such places as care facilities or group homes and laundromats would also be a resell opportunity.

The downy contains heavy metals...I would not compost it...I would however use the Tide.

Maybe. While I'm totally in favor of your idea, some food pantries will not take that type of item. Some won't take seconds, some won't take liquids unless in a can.
I found this out when my DD did a science project in 7th grade. She tested different brands of dish soap. When done we wanted to give some of the bottles to our fave food bank and they would not take them.

Your local animal shelter might be willing to take the Tide, if you want to donate it. When I worked for the animal shelter, we accepted donations like that - and we did a TON of laundry.

I would put out the word to family, friends and friends-of-friends. Bring your own container & pay $x per gallon. Your friend would make money and the buyers would get a bargain, a good deal all around.
If I had the opportunity, I would show up with a couple of 5 gallon buckets and a strapping teenage son to tote them for me.

No reason to throw money away.
This is a windfall. Treat it as such. Don't waste it on "maybe" helping your sparse fields. I'd rejug it and use it.
|
Re-jug...because a gallon of Tide goes for WAY more than 5.99 at the stores. In a SHTF...you are set to make money washing the clothes of a community! OR selling the liquid. Barter Item!!!!!

I'd notice if the liquid was lumpy, or cloudy from freezing...and wonder. I'd worry that there might be something too harsh that would damage my clothes if I wasn't told it was fine to use. But, now that I make my own laundry soap- who cares if it's not uniformly consistent in texture...since I know what's in the mix.
Since there's Tide and Downy...Maybe it froze ...that'll change it's looks. Our food pantry ministry visitors absolutely love when we have laundry products to give them.
