Yes, the Deeds are comeing in the mail in a couple of days. There were No back taxes to pay. The Tax office actualy owned the parcels, and the price was decided between Dh and the Tax Lady. 2 of the lots are buildable right now and have trees that we can cut for firewood if we want. These 2 sites have a view of the lake. The 3rd site, needs some fill as it slopes to a stream. No catails, which would make it wetland(unusable). It's not like we have any expectations on this land, we now have acess to fish/boat on a private lake.

Yes, parcels are marked for another auction in October. We'll be looking at the other lakes arround here. We used to live on a lake, didn't like the noise, the lack of privacy(people trespassing ect) but we miss fishing.

In most states you will have an auction on the county court house steps on certain dates. If it doesn't sell the county takes possession and must sell them after a certain amount of time. Usually if no body wants to buy because of the price then the sheriff or a bank will buy them. You can go to your land commissioner and he will send you the information on any delinquent property and you can bid on it but they will have the restrictions on the sale. You can't loose the money you pay on the property only the interest.

The way I understand buying back taxes is, is that you hold a tax lien against the property and the owner still has the opportunity to pay you off with interest to remove the lien..

I could be wrong, but that's the way I understand the way it works.

One other thing I'd wonder about is are there other liens on the property?
There are some properties the county may own out right for failure to pay taxes. My old county gave me a list one time. It was simply a matter of paying those years of taxes or liens for immediate possession.

Yes, I've already been online looking at past auctions. It has listed a minimum bid if nesessary and if it says "vacent" it meens it has a house on it. I could also tell if they had a house on it by the minimum price, like 1,200 dollars, and that more than 1 person bid.

Vacant means it has no buildings on it. Asked DH about this, he said there are always lots on Shay Lake up for tax sale because people think they are getting buildable lots, but they are actually getting swamp. Are you sure you have buildable lots?

Yup, went and looked, one has remants of an house and even the electric pole. We didn't even think about it when we bought them. Dh's friend has lots on a couple of lakes, he just uses them for fishing.

It aint that easy in NC. Go pay someone elses taxes
and you just done them a favor. After a few years,
varying from county to county, they will advertise a
sale for 30 days in the local paper. It goes up for
auction on the court house steps. After bidding, its
open for 30 more days for an upset bid. If after all
that you end up being the buyer, its your property.
Nobody coming back to claim it. They figure by then
the owner had ample time to do what they could.
You get a Sherrifs deed, and the taxes are cleared.
But if the previous owner had any other debt secured
with that property, you now are responsible.

If anyone is curious, here is a page,go look at what the parcel min. bid is set at and what it sold for (if it sold). From how I understand it,these parcels cannot go back to other owners(because this auction is over),and no back taxes due,you will get your deed within one month.
