Working outside , Tx , 11am to 7pm . Best Warm Clothes
..............I may start working the night shift , 11-7 , and spending several hours outside ! So , I need some help when purchasing warm work clothes , lightweight as possible , they will go over a company supplied uniform while working security . Cost is secondary too staying WARM ! Please given me brand names that I can look for while shopping , we have a Cabalas just north of Ft. Worth,tx so maybe I'll look there . , thanks , fordy

Get some long underwear and wear it UNDER the uniform. It is easy to layer up the top half, but your legs will be cold with just one layer of uniform pants.

Hubby who has many years experience working outside in weather close to you reccomends Carhart coveralls or a Whals or Walls (he cannot remember which way it is spelled) jacket. He says to put some long handles on under the coveralls. Hope this helps!

Definately wear layers. As far as brands, you can't go wrong with Carhartt. Also, Under Armor makes some really good stuff. A plus with them is that they started making sports clothing, so it's easy to move in them.

Under armour is good. I have some and it is good.

Depends how fast you get used to it . I was outside all this week with -30 to -40 windchills, jeans, tshirt, Tough Duck 2 piece jacket, winter boots and i didn't start feeling cold until i stepped in a running ditch yesterday and found the leak in my boot. I get too warm with long underwear on

You've really only got a few more weeks of cool weather to worry about in Ft Worth, stocking hat(to keep head and more importantly your ears warm), gloves and a good jacket and you're set. We're in the 50's at night now, yes it can get colder but not much.
|
I agree with the Under Armour but I am in PA so we are probably a lot colder than where you are. Hubby works on the gas well pads and he dresses in layers starting with Under Armour top and bottoms. He says it really works. He also wears a button down work shirt over a hooded sweat shirt and when he gets to work a Carrhart Jacket when he is out of truck. I know once he is all ready for work he can't stay in the house long or he gets to hot. Doubt you will need that many layers though!

.............OK , just want to thank you'll for all the great info ! I can see that there is more to this than I had realized . I'm going to spend some time with the various websites and familiarize myself with all the various products available .
...............The 'Layered' concept seems to be the proper approach to get me where I want to be ! I have a couple of weeks before this situation may materialize . , thanks for your(all of you'lls) help , fordy |
In a couple weeks it may be 70° there in N TX.

I used to work security. wear the uniform jacket and sweat pants and shirt under neath the uniform. It kept me warm.
|
Will you be moving or just sitting? That also makes a difference in what to wear.

I'd say some Walls insulated coveralls would be good. It is always colder to me at night than during the day with the same temps. The coveralls have zippered legs to get em on and off faster, but if it is warm, you can open them for ventilation, if the company will go along with that of course.
Walls has an outlet in Burleson and one in Cleburne, lots cheaper prices than retail at those places. I bought a long chore coat and a short jean lookin canvas jacket for less than $50 total for both at Burleson this fall. Some would be uniform lookin dependin on color of uniform. Ed |
I used to deliver in DFW every few days through several winters. When I stepped out of the truck down there it was like stepping into the tropics. I don't break out the coveralls up here until we hit the single digits. Reading DaleK's post, it is interesting how our bodies adapt to our local climate. I hear Jumping Jacks will keep you warm in cold weather, but I've never been able to find a store that sells that brand.

For longjohns go lightweight wool. Ibex is the best, pricey but not only does it last but it does not stink! And none of their lesser priced competitors do ti right. Made in Vermont from American wool. Seriously, a short or long sleeve top (17 micron) and duofold bottoms and you will be good to go. You can probably wear the wool shirt all week without washing it if you air it out at night, and no, I am not a hippy : ) A short sleeve will wick sweat away from you and could be worn in spring and fall as well.
And for outer layers, Carharts. |
