And it's fine if it's someone you know and have given permission to. My problem here and elsewhere has been people I don't know and have never given permission to hunting, snowmobiling, growing pot, cutting firewood off my land. I don't go on their lawn on their lot in town and spread manure, they should return the favor!

I havent found that to be a problem at all here Bret. The Ozarks is interspersed with many parcels of National Forest (Mark Twain) and everyone here is armed so we just dont have as much trespassing...and I worked for the Sherri f for a year so I got to hear about all the goings on.
When we bought our place, everyone in a 20 mile radius knew some new folks moved into the old XXXX place; and our farm will be known as the old XXXX place for another generation. No one around here bothers you and even the weird ones get left alone as long as they dont cause trouble. So unless you are in a unique circumstance where you have a large amount of property with most borders on national forest land or public highways the only thing your doing with immediately putting up signs and purple paint is telling folks who already know you live there that you regard them with suspicion and its just not usually necessary. You may end up choosing to do that but give it some time and get a feel before you do.
And dkhern brings up a good point, I limited out on deer this year and had family from out of state visit and get deer...all on other farms we were allowed to hunt because we try to be good neighbors and fit in. We have friends that we let harvest black walnuts from our 30 or so Black Walnut trees so they can sell them ($13.00 a hundred pounds shelled this year), another couple comes and picks black berries from our over abundance and in return we hunt, cut fire wood, were given a calf and they all purchase from our farmstand and buy eggs from us. Its just different in a lot of places in the Ozarks. We also know a couple that has lived here 10 years and no one even knows who they are or cares and they feel ostracized but they made their own bed and they regret it but folks have long memories in these parts. Cheat someone, lie, denigrate their ways, act like your superior and more educated (dont let the stereo-typical Ozarks bumpkin routine fool you) and your done and I doubt you could ever recover.
Just passing on what we found when we moved here almost 4 years ago.

Yup, sounds very familiar to most places I've lived. You make your own bed no matter where you go. This is still the Raven farm even though there hasn't been a Raven living here in close to 60 years now and the place next door is still the Putnam farm and the last Putnam left in 1960 something.

I've been hinting to my wife about a move to the Ozarks for nearly a year now. Sadly that girl is city thru and thru. She cooks real well though so I keep her around

Bret, I'm up here in the adirondacks with you and I'm also disgusted with these new decrees. I have also considered Missouri and the ozarks. Land taxes are low and government seems a bit more 'in check'. From what I have seen and heard from others hear lots of 'homesteaders' are over thataway and land I have seen there looks alot like what we have but some less of the softwood. Looks like a beautiful place to live IMO.
One thing that makes me drool about Missouri is that they have Fox squirrel which are the best hunting and eating IMO. Ozarks would be my first choice if I were to ever pull up stakes here.

Darntootin, interesting you mentioned squirrels. Where we lived previously in Alaska the squirrels were so tiny you wouldnt have enough meat on them to pick out of your teeth and I think on our first day or so here we had this huge squirrel run across our road and my wife didnt know what it was at first. They are some big boogers and the cotton tails can get huge too.
We hunt for meat and enjoy a nice Brunswick stew now and again and I think you just gave me an idea for tonight!

Just west of Champlain in Essex county. You are north west of me, I like that area and the area near Cranberry lake.

Up here we have some scrawny greys, and those same tiny red squirrels you spoke about. Not hardly worth a bullet IMO.

I'm with Salmonslayer on the Ozarks
We just bought 27 acres, 1440 sq ft place, big shop for dh, couple of decent outbuildings, fenced, nice limestone rock outcroppings, backs up to Mark Twain on 2 sides, mostly treed, some clearing, sits on top of a hill...closest town or city about 25 mins away in any direction...taxes 189.00 a year...paid 50,000...year round ponds...quiet and beautiful, just beautiful. We feel so blessed.
Hope you find "the" place but I'm voting for the Ozarks. We came here from the high mtns of CO and NM (for 20 years) and won't go back. We love the longer growing seasons, and yes, we had to adjust to the humidity, again, but it's all worth it...don't have to chop, split and haul firewood for 5-6 months out of the year just to stay warm. In fact, right now, under 6 inches of hay in a raised bed garden, my strawberries are still green and I love pulling root veggies in the middle of winter, although we haven't had much of a winter this year...gonna be a bug problem this summer...sigh.
But, ya takes your chances no matter where you go. I LOVE the Ozarks! Good people too.

Yup I do love the area I just think it is a shame that a few politically aggressive people from the city can make these edicts that effect our lifestyle so much up here. Land up here is beautiful and very affordable I put so much work into this place I'd hate to leave it. I'm gonna hang in and see how these laws play out, some might not even go through, IDK. But if it gets to be too much I'll have to head for greener pastures, probably the Ozarks or Kentucky. I will miss the ice fishing though

Well, I was talking about this with some other farmers yesterday. Everyone feels about the same- too many taxes, intrusions, stupid regulations and laws obviously developed by people that have no background in rural living, or any concern that they might be wrong either. When do say it's enough? We moved out of the Park because of Poppa Cuomos "21st Century Bond Act" (Agenda 21) even though it failed. Anyone can see the writing on the wall.

I really had to laugh at this! We pay $110 for ONE year in Michigan! I WOULD LOVE to only have to pay $55 for 2 years!

I know, its all relative isnt it? We moved from Alaska where everything was extremely expensive but we have gotten used to the low prices and we go into shock when we go back to visit.
The little mom and pop restaurant in our little place just raised the price of a cup of coffee from $.25 to $.30 (still kept the free refill policy though) and it caused quite a ruckus...

One thing I really like about the Ozarks is the libertarian attitude that is generations old. Here is an example: my land straddles two counties Taney and Ozark so when wanted to pull a building permit I checked with each county and this is what I was told. In Taney a building permit costs $15 but no one comes out to inspect your structure, in Ozark County there is no such thing as a building permit.
Since Ozark taxes are only 30 cents per acre per year we figured they needed the money more.

I can't imagine why anyone would move TO NY. It's getting bad here.
