all areas have rules for what can and cannot be burned in burn barrels and where they are allowed or disallowed, so check your local ordinances

LOL We had people on our trash service with once a week service. they had so little trash that I recommended they go to twice a month later we moved them to once a month.
Now with once a month service they generate LESS than a gallon of trash a month.......LOL they could save it up for quite a while before they would fill a standard trash can.
They dont buy much junk. and burn all wood and paper products in their wood stove. Their trash consists of a broken bottle some times , a bad canning jar lid, batteries and and some times a few parts from something broken.

No, not all areas have burning rules. They may in Michigan, but not in the Ozarks.

Easy peasy... bring over a 6 pack of beer when you go talk to them.

We live out in the country, no trash pickup.
We have a place we can bring the trash a few miles from the house but last year my truck blew its motor so it is pretty hard to get the trash there.
We use burn barrels. I also use the 2 trash cans in the home, one for non-burnable (metal, thick plastic) everything else goes into the other can and gets burnt in a barrel a few times per week.
That is how it works in the country.

It's interesting how some burning seems to be going on all over america....and beyond i'm sure...how much non burnable toxic crap is spreading through all our air? i will be forced to deal with it eventually but am aware of the way many who live around here continue to do things not because there the right way or smart way but because that's what we do here in the country...must be some way to educate them without alienating them? get to practice some real well thought out diplomacy on this one....or wait...just use the 6pak idea..thanks for all the replies. the wifey is the stained glass artist...it's everywhere around here..and the link flowergrl. that says it all.

We also burn paper products only.. Plastic gets either recycled or trashed, depends on what it is. Food scraps go either to the compost or the woods.
When there were 4 of us here, we hauled trash and recycle about once every 2 months. Now that there is only 2 of us here, I don't know how long it will take to fill the trash cans. Any metals get recycled/scrapped along with electronics etc..

There is nothing that I am aware of in our area either. Sure if things are real dry they that is the County will,, put on burning restrictions, so you can't burn even in a burning barrel, but other then that, it is pretty much up to what ever you want to get rid of by burning, and I sure burn whatever is burnable that is no lie. And iof I have stuff that will not burn I take it to my friends that have a dumpster, and let dumpster company deal with it. LOL

We thankfully dont have any neighbors within view or hearing and we have a burn barrel and an outside wood boiler. We keep a slop bucket in the kitchen and all compostable items go there for our compost pile, meat scraps go to the hogs or chickens, paper gets burned and plastics and things like that goes to our trash bin that gets picked up weekly and metals go to the scrap pile.
But I will tell you, if some johnny come lately buys a property somewhere around here and then wants to "educate" me about my burning or woodsmoke from the OWB they will get a very chilly reception and word will go out quick that a know it all trouble maker has moved into the area. I completely agree with you about burning plastics but you need to tread lightly on how you approach things like this or you will have bigger problems than burning plastic.

At my city house I have a small decorative chimenea. While I cant have an "Open Burn" I can get away with burning anything I want in the Decorative fire, so I do.
On my contry property, its fun to see how big of bonfires we can have. All of the property is 40+ acres, and its open country so no problems there either. Our closest town is about 2000 people and its over 20 miles away.

I live out of town and have no trash pick up. When I get enough I haul the paper, glass and metals to town to the recycler. Everything else gets composted or hauled to the landfill.

As a kid, everyone burned out in the country. Trash pickup is a city invention.
However since they closed all the local dumps it gets harder and harder to get rid of the old full burn barrel.
We burned up till last year, have to get a burn permit from the township for summer burning but when snows on the ground it's not needed.

Ya our little towns land fill closed many years ago after ONE GUY found out he was within a FEW FEET of being too close to that landfill according to what the law said, and he made such a "Stink", Yes Pun intended, and the village had to close their landfill.
