There is a scientific term for that and I can't think of it at the moment. What it refers to is something which can be accomplished artificially in one operation in a lab or an undetermined number of years by hybridizing. If it takes someone 20 years to develop a certain variety by normal breeding, why should it be wrong if it can done in a lab in one year?

The only reason why he lost on the Patent protection is because monsanto has deep pockets and needed protection in the future.

The non gmo farmers here in canada really appreciate the roundup ready sprays done by air on there crops which monsanto does regularly but deny
Why would Monsanto be spraying?
And what is a roundup ready spray?

is it really that hard to understand I meant roundup spray. obviously you guys have some intelligence. Im not the one claiming ive had my crops sprayed from the air but many canadian organic canola producers are. And as far as yields dropping since 1997 the canola yield has gone down 4% per acre in canada.

If you want to live in the myth, read ACRES mag. If you want the truth to set you free, read something that has the actual court transcripts.

As long as people believe that the Canadian Canola grower was able to sell tons of canola seed from someplants that he grew that got pollen that blew off some plants that grew from seeds that fell off a passing truck. Then he "accidently" sprayed his non-GMO Canola with the herbacide Roundup. The "mutated plants" were then harvested and seed sold as Roundup Ready Canola to local farmers.

Anyone can hire lawyers. But a local jury decides.

im so glad you were there haypoint and witnessed the whole event from his start more than 40 years ago untill 2002 why didnt you just video tape it for us all and save everyone the time? As far as anyone can hire lawyers why did monstanto need 19 of them when percy could barely afford 1?

And in the end percy had the last laugh when monsanto had to pay him almost 700$ compenstaion for the roundup ready canola still growing on his farm 5 years later when it hadnt been planted in all that time. Little compensation for the nearly 1 million $ he spent defending himself.

I'm not interested in his biography. All the information I need was discussed during the trial. Both sides made their claims and the jury ruled.
One of his neighbors is on this site and he thinks the guy lied. Perhaps he can provide you with the "Life Story of a Patent Thief"?

Of course he planted GMO seed.... HIS OWN seed became CONTAMINATED with GM material.
Do you think it proper that contaminated plants suddenly become the property of Monsanto?

The farmer fully knew he was propagating patented seeds, so he was found infringing on a Monsanto patent, as the courts had found.

That's why they have patents.

That's the myth he tried to use. The Jury didn't believe it either. That isn't what happened. You won't believe me when I tell you, so please search out the truth yourself.

Canola yields have gone up dramatically in the time frame you mention. To the tune of about 4 or more bushels an acre, which is more like a 20% increase than the out of thin air 4 per cent decrease you mention.

As far as "organic" canola producers having their crops sprayed by air by monsanto's very own roundup ready herbicide, another fairly obvious problem with that. There are VERY few guys who even hazard to try to grow organic canola in the first place. It is pretty well impossible to grow this crop "organically", so very few even attempt it. It is a heavy feeder, an very uncompetetive with weeds, making organic canola production very risky.

Try again...

Percy Schmeiser is trusted, until you go to his home town, then you will hear how he REALLY is. He saved his own canola seed that he planted on his own land. Canola just does not cross to the extent to get almost pure rr seed in a few generations. He obviously planted patented seed in the first place, otherwise it would have taken many years to get 95% pure gm canola with the rr trait. I would hazard to guess I am one of one or two people on here who actually grow the crop, and so I know a fair bit about canola.

I don't know the man, you live a lot closer to him than I do.

Was that proven, or is that the allegation? I have a hard time believing that, as he has avowed no interest in GM crops, being a long time successful seed breeder himself.

I'm guessing there are a few more than 'one or two', but I can guarantee you know more about canola than I do. We don't grow much rapeseed down here.

If that is what he did on purpose he is actually dumber than they made him look in court .
I truly don't think he did though.

I followed this case when it first came out, but admittedly haven't kept up with it much since then. I have heard HIS side of the story, from the many interviews I have read, but that was years ago.
Reading up on it now, I see there is much more to the story...

I think the question was, when will it die? Monsanto myths ? And I would have to say, it will die when it is nothing but a myth, and we all know that will never happen. > Thanks Marc

As I recall, he bought RR canola from a neighbour claiming he was out and wanted to make canola meal for some livestock. Hard for anybody to prove that he then planted that canola instead of his own but the court and most reasonable folks thought the results spoke for themselves.

FYI an agricultural organization I used to be part of approached him regarding being a
keynote speaker at our annual conference about 10 years ago, thinking he wanted people to hear his side of the situation so they could decide for themselves. Imagine our surprise when he demanded $25,000 for a half hour speech plus all expenses. This was at a time when world-renowned speakers were under $10,000. Needless to say we didn't hear him speak.

I edited that one! I meant on here. lol There are probably 40 000 or so canola growers in Canada. My mistake...

Rapeseed is a relative of the canola plant, not the same thing. in other words, canola is not rapeseed, and rapeseed is not canola.
