Free (or almost free) projects - pic heavy

DH and I have been scrounging pallets (it's become a bit of an obsession ) so I've been on a project building frenzy and thought I'd share a few photos.....most are pretty simple and self explanatory - cause I'm not a carpenter!

The first three projects were done recently, the potting bench was my first pallet project. DH mostly built the wood shed and that's the only one that cost any significant amount (but I *think* still under $200). I was looking up ideas for the shed and saw a really nice one - one of the comments was that it looked very "wrong side of the tracks" :D I guess that's us!

Anyway, I hope you enjoy the photos, if anyone has any to add please feel free....I have a lot of pallets left and need some inspiration.

Thanks for sharing your pics! You are both very creative.

tailwagging 12/21/12 04:48 PM

COOL use of a rake!!

TamiJoyFarm 12/21/12 04:56 PM

I love the woodshed!

Dusky Beauty 12/21/12 05:00 PM

I love the lot, and think you did fantastic. I've got no use for snooty folks that can't appreciate simple aesthetic appeal of country function.

grannygardner 12/21/12 05:36 PM

Love them all, especially the wood shed. If that's considered "wrong side of the track that would be the group I'd want to be in. It makes so much sense to use free pallets for projects instead of buying new lumber.

Pearl B 12/21/12 05:43 PM

Nice pics! You are very talented with using scrounged pallets.
I especially like the photo box.

Annsni 12/21/12 05:52 PM

LOVE the wood shed and it looks very much like what we have at our camp in the Adirondacks!!

kasilofhome 12/21/12 06:01 PM

That's my wood shed --I just covered it with Alaskan siding --a tarp.

MO_cows 12/21/12 07:17 PM

Nice work. Crafty and creative.

jwal10 12/21/12 07:32 PM

Very nice projects. I love the look of pallet wood. My goat shed is made from pallets and 6 8' treated 4"x4"s. Half the wood at my off grid cabin were pallets, once....James

I love pallets. Your shed is fantastic.

Here is a set of adirondack style chairs and the step by step directions I built last summer.

I like all the chairs!

Jasoneakers 12/21/12 09:19 PM

Awesome

Those are awesome!

Incidentally I just wrote and published a book about building things on the homestead with free materials. http://www.amazon.com/Scrounged-Home.../dp/1480142239

You'd be amazed at what you can do with a barrel!

DH built our garden cabin mostly with free materials. All the framing lumber, most of the foundation lumber, the concrete foundations, the exterior siding, all the windows (except for two small ones in the eves), the door, and all the decking in the front was FREE. We paid for the roofing, the decking on the side, and just those two small windows. The wiring was recycled, light switches recycles, the glass fixture recycled, and DH took apart an existing wood shed off of the shop, and built it onto the back of the cabin. Here is a pic:

I must be "wrong side of the tracks", because that woodshed looks neat, tidy, and totally pretty to me!

jd4020 12/21/12 09:55 PM

Have you looked on pinterest or just typed in ideas for pallets in the search engine? I've done that and have seen many, many great ideas from sheds to walkways to fences and beds. Love what you've done here. There are several places in my area that set pallets out on the curb and folks can take what they want. I have quite a pile myself for projects.
Thanks for sharing.
God bless,
jd

snowlady 12/22/12 08:58 AM

Love all of your creations!

Jolly 12/22/12 04:37 PM

I'm gonna build that woodshed....

AverageJo 12/22/12 05:29 PM

Put me down as another plus for the woodshed!! Looks a lot nicer than some I've seen!! LOL

Rustaholic 12/22/12 06:42 PM

And just a couple hours ago I cut up six pallets for the wood stove.
Then I brought in six wet ones to cut up in a couple days when they are dry. That is all I use to heat my Northern Michigan house.
I have also built sheds and a goat pen from pallets.
All very nice projects I have seen here.

Jokarva 12/22/12 06:59 PM

Thanks guys - and I love the pics!

Jason, your book looks interesting, I'll have to check it out. Makes me happy that there are others scrounging and repurposing out there.....I just hate to see useable stuff go to the landfill. And.....I'm also cheap - so it's the perfect hobby for me :D

scwit 12/22/12 07:39 PM

All your projects are really nice and I'd love to have that woodshed here. We just cover our wood with tarps. I too must be from "the wrong side of the tracks".

Thanks Jokarva. Beautiful work, wish I'd met you before and I would've asked you to include the pictures!

I like all of the things you have built. And, I thought the shed was really nice, lol.

Ditto pinterest- some waaayyyyyy creative people making lots of useful things out of old pallets.

Thanks for sharing your photos.

Felicity 12/22/12 08:21 PM

I liked all of your projects!

I'll be saving this thread for future reference.

Thanks so much for sharing these!

libertygirl 12/22/12 09:42 PM

Beautiful wood shed....there's so many uses for everyone else's "trash".

meanwhile 12/23/12 08:12 AM

Very nice. Thanks for sharing the ideas and photos.

FarmboyBill 12/23/12 08:23 AM

Good looking stuff

tinknal 12/23/12 11:55 AM

Ignore the skinny goat, I had just bought her. She is nice and fat now and still milking.

I made this milking stand out of cube shaped pallets I got from work.

Looks very sturdy! What are those cross braces you're using? That's something I need on some of my projects.

That is metal banding that came on the pallets. I've since removed the ones on the top on both sides so we can milk from either side.

bennypapa 12/24/12 09:43 AM

How are you guys taking your pallets apart? I have had awful luck trying to get the planks off without destroying them.

DamnearaFarm 12/24/12 10:15 AM

Cats paw and hammer, usually. I loosen each nail in whatever piece I'm working on and then I start removing them. If i'm in a hurry and small pieces will do then it's the jigsaw or skilsaw :)

That is the tallest goat milking stand I have seen.
Why so tall?
When I had my goats I built a stand that was about 16 inches off the floor.
Then I just sat on a stool to milk the goats.
I sold that stand but I need to build another one because I am really considering getting a couple milk goats.

I'd love to see more of your set up. Please post pics of your garden area, it looks so interesting.

Usually a pry bar, hammer and muscle (which I am sadly lacking). I do use a hacksaw to cut thru nails sometimes if they're really stubborn, but I like the look of the old nail holes and weathered ends....so I rarely cut the pallets apart (which some prefer to do).

m33036272 12/26/12 06:58 PM

in my area we can get over sized pallets from glass co and furnace supply co also crates that 4 wheelers and snowmobile and garden tractors com in no need to buy 4x4 or larger whel oversized creats come on larger skids

Because I'm lazy and wanted to build it without using a saw...........................
