Someone had PM'd me ( afraid to post here due to the venomous nature of some negative posters ) and suggested mushrooms. I think that is a great idea! Not so much for this piece of land I am looking into but on my homestead where I have alot of woodland. Thanks for the input!

SO Let me get this straight.
IF ANYONE comes in here with some cock a mamie idea that THEY think ought to work, and try to get those experienced in Farming/Gardening/Homesteading to vouch that it can and SHOULD work, Then WE have to put up with those people. BUTT
If a person or persons repeatedly try to point out that a particular idea with no basis of fact or information about THAT idea WONT work, and after several attemps to try to get that idea across, they become cranky, THEN THEY should not be tolorated.??
Ive seen people come in here in years past, that didnt know nothing about what they were talking about and were trying to get people who did know about the subject to see why it SHOUDL work.
I remember a guy who wanted to use a wringer wash machine to make a sorgum press, BUT theres ben MANY others.
People who cant understand why a farmer should need hundreds of acres of land
People who can understand why you shouldnt be able to put 5 cows and 5 goats on 10 acre farm, discounting farmstead and garden, and still make hay foe them in the wintertime.
People who think its crazy to have lots of machinery in order to farm, OR GARDEN, when all they need is a hoe rake and schove,.
Yes, Ive been told there are people who garden with just those few implements, BUT until I see it, Im not agreeing that its possible. At least with a 90sq garden like mine, AND HOLD A JOB Besides.
There are many other instances of such stuff.. I tolorate them if the people saeeking the answers seem sincere. Its when they get bellgerant that i tend to get my crank turned.
DOUBT IF IT WORKS THAT WAY.

FBB, anyone who says that it is impossible to make a modest profit through some kind of farming endeavor has no business giving 'advice' to anyone on the subject. That is not a debate, its a fact that many people make a profit farming. I have made a profit ( small though it may be ) on my farm, and those that haven't are the ones posing as experts telling me it can't be done no way no how.
I don't know all there is to know about farming, but if you haven't ever managed to profit from your land then PM me, I'll give you a call and tell you how I did it. Certainly, if you haven't started a farm and done it successfully, then you shouldn't be here on HT posing as an expert and telling people that they can't do it. I know that all businesses have a high failure rate ALL BUSINESSES. And when we fail we can often get wrapped up in feeling hopeless and the whole thing seems futile and impossible...yet many do prosper through farming, that is not an opinion but an unalterable fact. Maybe I have been to quick to return a blow with a blow ( what would Jesus do ), maybe I should feel sorry and have compassion for those with a defeated and negative outlook who lash out at me. Well I dunno. I'm just not there yet.
But again, and much more importantly, I want to thank all those who have contributed and tried to help. I have received up 6 PM's now from people who wanted to give advice or suggestions but were too afraid to post here because of a certain element. I think it brings down the value of an otherwise excellent forum.

I know a guy that caters to the horse people raises the type grasses they want . Lots of times they pick it up in the field when he bales it he has a set following year to year . Yep there are folks that want it delivered and stacked and don't worry about the cost .
Another guy i know has a pto driven grinder mixer he thought about doing some custom grinding and blending but so far just hasn't had the time .
Here pick your own strawberries do real well one guy just retired after many years did real well . Socked away a bunch of cash i bet too.

DT I remember in your origional posting that you were making modest profit in hay, but you wernt satisfied with that.
Ive farmed since 69. IF I ever made a profit, I never knew it. I worked for 45yrs to support my love for farming.
When I was your age and younger, I didnt have anybody I could gfo to that I thought of that could help me. I was too proud to go to my dad and relation and just muddled through.
U got this avenue that I didnt have.
I dont so much give advice TO BE TAKEN as I give advice to tbe thought about. Lots of times, IF a person posting , as you are, and is willing to throw, as well as catch ideas, then we can maybe both learn. I did that with Rambler and others talking about corn growing. I was trying to bring my knowledge up to the 20th century as it were, and I guess/hope they saw that I had the basics enough to be able to try to plant seeds of knowledge in my mind to ponder. I wrote all of it down, and, whenever i hear anything about raising corn that I dont know as fact, BY MY KNOWLEDGE, I check with those notes.
As to the mechanics of OLD TIME FARMING. Ive forgotten more than youll ever know. You, being younger, and seeking knowledge of the newest and best ways to farm will hopefully learn more than ill ever know. Thats the way it goes. Thats why we learn some from each other, cause each of us has, or will have, hopefully, knowledge that is somewhat helpful to someone needing it.
My thoughts, are, to listen to everybody kindly giving advice. Try to KINDLY find the values, OR faults in that advice by probing it, to see what the poster AND others have to say about it. THEN, make your decision.

The thing that scares me, in this litigation rich society nowadays, is lawsuits steming from people getting hurt on your property, picking whatever, Falling outa trees, getting bit by a snake in the straw, ect.

Since these fields are already hay,and you have the equipment for haying. Build up the soil and make as much hay as possible sounds like your area ought to be small farms and shouldn't be to big a problem selling it.
The problem is farming is a business and way to many people treat it as a hobby, not expecting to make a profit, going in with the proper frame of mind that the land is going to pay for itself helps. At least it has for me. This place at least pays for itself and most years gives a living.
Pick what you like to do be it animals (my interest) market garden, row crop, etc. and go to town.
