I have Carla Emery's book too, and I refer to it often. However, I would not recommend that it be the *only* book because as much as I like it, a lot of what's in there simply is not accurate or complete. It's an excellent overview (Back to Basics by Reader's Digest is like this as well) and a great way to get one's feet wet, but when you get more into a given area, branch out into books on whatever topic that are more comprehensive and up to date.

Although not comprehensive, Ruth Stout's books extolling all things virtuous about mulch in the garden are very informative and downright pleasant to read. And she might argue that they were comprehensive. In a drought, mulch will cure it or mitigate it. Poor soil, you need mulch. Don't like to weed the garden, get mulch you silly thing. Roof leaking on the barn? Throw a little mulch up there and your worries are over.

I think mine might just be the first book I read on the subject...One Acre and Security by Bradford Angier...homesteading in British Columbia.

I'm always up for another book : ) so I also ordered the John Vivian for myself for Christmas. I like the Emery book - it's a good starting point, think of the information as wide but not deep. Then dig deeper into topics as you want or need to.

Intersting Read

Thought I’d chime in. I don’t have many other books to compare it to and being stuck in the city I have little to no experience testing things either, but I’ve thoroughly enjoyed “Practical Skills” by Gene Logsdon.

Thanks to everybody at this forum for sharing their experiences so we who are still living in the concrete jungle can learn and enjoy.
