Well, first step is putting a bullet through their radiator - ideally when they are not in the car, but do it anyway.
Second is - they put dogs on your property? You're entitled to protect your livestock. There are baits made for foxes and coyotes, that dogs will take as well. If you also have dogs, note carefully the location of the baits so you can pull them if necessary; and also muzzle your dogs. Night vision scope and shoot stray dogs also may seem advisable - ideally out of their sight, but Heck - if necessary while the dogs are heeled.

But of course the real ideal is to get the authorities to do their duty. As has already been advised, DNR for poaching, DEA or EPA for "foul smells" from their homes, law enforcement for shooting towards your house. Heck, put your own bullet-holes in your home, then point them out to the sheriff. Even tell the sheriff that you've had enough, you've reported it enough, you've had no help from him so far, and if that continues you're going to start shooting back. Copy the state attorney on that. Then, if they don't step up, do it.

You can go over the head of the local game warden. Regional and state level officers are listed in the hunting rules and regs.

But, from the side of the warden, unless they are caught in the act or on film, it didn't happen. Get photo evidence and then call. License plate numbers are great.

The local police should respond if you say people are in your woods shooting toward your house.
The poster said it was Logan County......the one Paul Harvey talked about many years ago on national tv...."if you want to commit murder, go to Logan County, Ohio".

Years ago a friend had a problem with hunters bringing their dogs on his property at night and hunting. He never could seem to stop them.
He invited me to bring a couple of my dogs over and hunt his property during the night.
The first night my dogs caught a pack chasing deer across a field.
The next day I was at a local store and overheard a group of hunters telling about their dogs getting into a pack of wolves the night before. Seems like they lost several dogs and had pretty hefty vet bills on others. It didn't take but a couple of times before they decided to hunt elsewhere.

Tie a flash light to a goats head. Turn on the light and turn it loose. Did that for a game warden once. He spent several hours trying to find out who was out at night. Might work if your poachers were thinking someone was out there hunting them down.
My personal opinion is your LEO are in on it or geting somekind of gain from it.

Don't use a goat. Use an animal you don't like.

Identifying your property on film is easy. Just get a bunch of those neon flags and stake or tie them in trees around your property and put them in view of your camera. Make the really obvious ones hard to untie so that it will buy you some camera time and hopefully catch your trespassers' close-up if they try to untie them.

Take a picture of the flags during the day so you have documentation that they are there.

I though of that also but those aluminum nails around 1 inch long that I lost out of the back end of my truck is hard to pick up. The only way to do this is to use a shovel and get a lot of dirt also then what can you do with it? I will never buy aluminum nails again until I have a use for them. No matter how you get them out some of them will puncture a tire. If it had been regular nails I could have used a magnet to get them up.

Build several small cabins and rent them and your land out to a hunting club. They will not take kindly to poachers and night hunters because they are paying good money for what the poachers are stealing. They will likely help put an end to it.

I've successfully discouraged trespassers by boldly taking their photograph THEN calmly reminding them that this is private property. Only do this if you're sure they won't shoot you, though! (In my case, I was dealing with obnoxious teens who were cutting my fence so they could cut across to the bus stop, not poachers, so slightly less of a threat level.)

If you get a photograph on your land of the hunters, don't let the cops tell you that you can't prove it's your land. I call BS on that. You can return to the same spot with cops in tow, take another photo, and then match the bushes, rocks and tree trunks up. Easy enough.

Also, it's a bit pricey, but Logitech has a REALLY nice home security system that would work for getting good photos of the bad guys. The cameras only record when they detect motion, and you can access the (time stamped) photos on Logitech's website. They're wifi, so you do not need to run cable. This is an example of a video taken with one of their security cams. This video's from my father's cabin.

(Note the high angle of this camera, which is mounted way up high -- at human head height, at close range, you'd get a good view. They also make cameras that can be panned and zoomed remotely.)

You may find other companies with similar cameras.

If you're worried about them vandalizing your property, a few strategically placed hidden cameras will put a quick stop to that.

In addition to well hidden real cameras, you could also put a ton of DECOY cameras that are very visible and very obvious, complete with blinking LEDs. You could also put some non-working game cameras (which take still photos) stuck in very obvious locations would also keep the bad guys guessing. Let them know you have LOTS of cameras up and are they sure they'll find every single one????

(Check eBay for big lots of busted cameras being sold for parts. If you're handy, you may even be able to put together a few working cameras from the parts.)

If you find creek crossing damage and call DNR.
If you find a used Sterno can call DEA.
If you saw some pot growing and even if you can't find that area now call Sheriff.

Me thinks your smart enough not to do the hunt them thing.

Here too.

Hire an off duty deputy to be at your barn a few nights, once they hear and see what goes on with one of their own calling it in you will love those results... Our off duty deputies make $ 45 an hour won't be cheap for a few nights, but maybe worth it...

Very good idea. An approach with someone that cares and makes a very very good witness.

My ADT boobytrap device idea was given to me by an ADT employee in IL. Seems like they had a client who had somebody window peeping their little boy (sicko person) they couldn't catch him so they told them about the board and deck screw idea. They planted a few outside their son's windows at night and sure enough on the first night heard somebody screaming in their front yard. They went outside to find a board between the house and sidewalk and a trail of blood. The screws hold on and won't let go.

End of problem for those folks.

At the farm, I was suspecting that some Amish neighbors were helping themselves to my pond when we were at work so I posted no trespassing signs with the words, GAME CAMERA ENFORCED! printed on them with black marker. I've found hoof prints leading up to one of the signs but no further. I also move my cameras around the property in order to keep things off balance.

Make sure and have your property properly posted NO TRESPASSING. If somebody does then come on your property unauthorized, they are criminally trespassing at that point.

You might consider involving a home security company like ADT in your problem. I was also told by them that they can set up security cameras that will catch a trespasser and once caught and taken to court, they always win the case once they lay the recording in front of the judge.

I find blasting away with a ugly black rifle, in their general direction, usually gets their attention.

Our game wardens were neutered a few years back.... it's totally legal to go out spot lighting with rifles... just say your hog hunting. Imagine our wardens are home every night since then...

If you know who they are, maybe you should do some intimidating yourself... Being known as a crazy mammajammer does have it's benefits.

I daresay, if I had similar problems here, our wardens would set out 'Bucky' right off the road, and catch these guys and take their vehicles, rifles, and ream their bank accounts.

I don't know what JACK ROCKS are, but have you thought about placing a few booby traps where the poachers travel. If you can use your imagination you could set a few booby traps to scare the gee-willies out of em. But don't blow them up and don't shoot at them. In todays world theres a lot of military type assult weapons being use that hold a lot of ammuntion. You wouldn't want a couple hundred rounds shot back at you.

(yes, I said assult weapons)

Oldcountryboy,

Yes we know you said assault weapons. Now could you tell us which assault weapons you are talking about because I'm a military veteran and I've used assault weapons but I haven't been able to find any at any gun store or sporting goods store in town. So if you could point me to them I'd sure like to buy some. Thanks for the help.

Go down to the Sheriff's office and file restraining orders against the ex cops and their buddies. You feel like your life is in danger, right?
