I know heavy trucks sometimes get tested for ORD at weigh stations and police traps, but has anyone ever seen a pickup stopped and tested?
I sure have here. 2 years ago, farm show, 20,000 people over 2 days... Set up a road block at the entrance and dipped EVERY diesel vehicle going in or passing by. It's also fairly normal (3-4 times a year) to set up at the sales barn and do the same, going in or driving past.
BTW here if you get caught, they take all of your on road diesel vehicles past and present in the last seven years, calculate the mileage travelled, diesel used over that time by the manufacturers estimated efficiency, and if you can't provide receipts for every drop of clear diesel they estimate you pay back taxes on the difference with stiff interest plus a hefty fine

excellent info, thanks Bearfoot. That little bit of HT intelligence might have just saved me money and aggravation. MANY THANKS
Glad I could help

I didn't know myself until somebody gave me a 300 gallon tank, and I was trying to figure out if I could just put it on a trailer instead of having fuel delivered.

Luckily I asked the guy that leases my farm, and his trailer holds about 500 gallons so he knew all the rules. He will burn more in a day than I use in a year

Several times a year. The state folks set up the blockade near a livestock auction house or a farm equipment auction, and pull over every diesel pickup going by. Wire with a cotton swab in each tank.

Very common 'here'. Fines are something lke $2000 here. It can be based on a couple different things, but typically defaults to about $2000.

I've heard of them swabbing a gas truck a time or 2 - if you get the new guy, and your valves chatter a little, he mistakes your pickup for diesel.....

They also check diesel pick ups in MT. There is a clear fuel filter under the hood on many models that gives an instant color check as to what has been run through it.

Where are you? I've got two 400 gal. rectangular lube oil tanks I've used to store kerosene. In the past I kept one in the back of a box truck. I used to get strange looks when I filled at truck stops. The truck is one of those cutaway vans with a box. I got stopped by DOT once. They never batted an eye at the tank when they looked in the back.

If you filled it, that would be 2,860 lbs of fuel.

Only one station sells ORD in my area. At one time I could expect 30-40 cents a gallon cheaper. It does have red dye. but once in awhile, with fuel prices changing every day, I've seen ORD at the same price as regular diesel. I know it is cheaper because there's no road tax on it, but the station is free to set their price anyway they want.

At one time local Fuel dealer provided below ground tanks on your farm if you bought their fuel. But that makes them liable when it springs a leak. Now, they won't even supply an above ground tank.

I have three red plastic fuel cans that I get fuel in. When I'm getting close to some big tractor use, I fill the cans every time I go to town. I had filled them, but wasn't sure what tractor I'd use, so left them in the back of the truck. Well, a thief happened by and snached my three red cans of diesel fuel. I doubt he knew it wasn't gasoline. He was caught, long list of stolen stuff. I want to find out if he poured it into his car. Does give some satisfaction. I bought red plastic gasoline cans because they were $3.00 cheaper than the yellow diesel cans.

A friend had traded for a diesel pickup about a month ago. He was checked at a local cattle sale barn and they determined he had some off road fuel in the tank. He had a heck of a time proving he had only put in road diesel since he owned the truck, had to show receits and mileage to get out of a very large fine. That red dye will show up for quite a while.

I have been looking for a above ground tank too but happened upon a 30gallon oil barrel at the Co-op while getting a burn barrel.

Cost was 9 bucks, they had 55s at 16.00, only thought about using for fuel when he said they were uncut tops which were sent by mistake. I filled with gas and stabil to have for generator.

I was also wondering why I couldn't use plastic 30s or 55s for fuels, thinking about asking the local plastic barrel Co. here as they are cheap too.
