Excercised my right last night! Had a cheap chinese folder sitting on my workbench right next to my grinder with a buffing wheel mounted, so I though I would buff up the edge just to see what would happen, and before I knew it, my left arm was bald!

I probably don't even need the second wheel of the set, already having a buffing wheel, but might as well do it right. I can see what they mean about using a small grinder. Mine is a 3/4 hp and the motor does get in the way...

Got a set of wheels for Christmas. They sure do work nice! The course wheel works great for restablishing a bevel on a worn blade and the honing wheel polishes up the edge to a mirror shine, so sharp, it scares the hair off!

I've used the very same type of wheels for 15 years in my leather shop. Bought them at a leather trade show in Sheridan. I've used them a lot, and they should still last me a lifetime. It's still possible to overheat a blade, just be aware.

They do work well, although if you are using a bench grinder set-up that doesn't have much width between the two wheels you should be mindful not to grind your forearm or elbow on the grit wheel while working a blade on the slotted wheel. Don't ask me how I know this.

Edited to add: Here is a long thread with some good info in regards to set-up, maintenance, technique and such of the paper wheel system. There are pictures of how folks have their grinders/wheels set-up including some that have added guides of various types to help get consistent angles on the grind, including one that uses an inexpensive laser and homemade mount if that is of interest to you.

be careful with paper wheels...They sometimes throw the knife if caught in the small gaps.
5 stitches later...
