Spike, you could put some brackets on both sides of the door on the inside wall and slip some 2x4 across the door.

I got an 8x8or 10 I think it's1500 gallon fuel tank I was thinking about burning the inside n then sandblasting the inside n painting it. Stand it up on end an buring it as a root cellar. I think the space would be better utilized like that. I thought that the sand blasting would take any of the residual chemicals out of the tank?

2 other root cellar concepts
Neighbor buried an insulated ice delivery cargo box 8'x8'x12' off a truck frame.
He left the top and about 12" on the sides uncovered.

A friend buried a used cylinder shaped fiberglass gasoline storage tank 8'x8'x16'. He left about a foot exposed on top for some light since the tank is semi-translucent.
The interesting thing about this tank is there are absolutely no old gas fumes inside. The fiberglass dosen't absorb petro"stuff".

If I was to bury anything in the ground I think I would cover it with foam board insulation and then some dirt to keep the summer heat and the winter cold out. But then most things made for something else like school busses and delivery cargo boxes are not structurally designed to be buried, which I suppose is the reason that people only cover the sides of such things.

I am still wondering what a good width of a root cellar should be. I would like to hear from people that have a root cellar already and what they think of the with of theirs.
