Yvonne's hubby and other floor cutters:
Yes! We thought about the floor cutting too but the hole would have been right in the middle of the walking area just inside the back door. Since we plan to rent this Cabin out again, we did not want to cut the floor.
Besides that, Bomb making is more fun. Plus shoving 16 foot long bamboo poles up under there with bowls of essential oil taped to it!
When the skunk died at our Cabin #2, we did cut a hole in the floor but still could not find the body. We cut the hole where the worst of the smell was coming from and it also was at a spot where the floor was laid smack on the dirt............I swear - if I ever build another house then the crawlspace will be at least 6 feet high all over so I can get to anything that needs getting to.......this business of a 6 inch crawlspace is ......you-know-what.......
Today the boys shoved more Eucalyptus oil under the Cabin and also put drops of it along the inside wall of the crawlspace as far in as they could reach. It is a warm sunny day and so the heat of the sun will make the good Eucalyptus smell rise up into the wall cavity of the Cabin. We hope.
The inside of the Cabin still smells better. Much better. Only a hint of the skunk. The peppermint seems to be taking over the Eucalyptus smell and so now, we are wondering if Peppermint chemistry somehow eliminates Eucalyptus. One son is trying to research it online and find out the actual science behind it since that might help select the right product.
Thanks everyone! Have good weekend.

Thank you Chief Cook. Yes, "its always something" is often heard around here.
Today the dogs rolled in bear poop again. The boys have a new shampoo mix they use since the bear poop has a very nasty smell. They mix baby shampoo and baking soda and use the paste on the dogs. Then, rinse good.
Thanks everyone.

Below is what the boys put on the FB page this morning. I did not see the dead body but they reported back yesterday. Actually they forgot to close up the Cabin last night since we had a crowd out here. They baked 22 or 24 pizzas last night plus a couple dozen bread sticks. In all the baking and cooking they forgot to go close the doors back up and so I am hoping there is not another skunk in there this morning.
Probably the fresh air will help rot the carcass and freshen up the whole building.
I hate skunks.
From FB page:
We found the body! Skunk body that is. We still cannot reach it and do not really want to however, at least we see where the stinky thing is located. We removed two more sections of the crawlspace tin and the body is near the other hair we saw on photos before. We left the whole Cabin open last night and are hoping that helped some too. Today we will shove more essential oils underneath and inside.

The active ingredient in Febreze will work, but it will take a much stronger concentration than what is used in Febreze. The original name of the product is Odo Ban, and I believe you can still buy it at Sam's Club. There is an 800 number on the label that you can call and they will tell you the best mix ratio for what you are trying to do. I would use it full strength in a pump up sprayer and apply liberally.

Too funny! I feel your pain! We live very close to a big city, and 10 miles in one direction are very rural people (like us) and 10 miles in the other direction (where we do most of our business) is very urban. I had to take my 11-year-old son to the ped (urban) this week and my son goes in his usual attire, plaid long sleeve shirt, jeans with belt/cowboy buckle, cowboy hat and boots. Well, the ped apparently thought it was a costume of sorts and asked where had he gone to be dressed that way, and did he go to school like that? Very nicely, was just making conversation with him. My son says, "Nah, we didn't do school today." To which I say "We homeschool" then he looked at her, nodded my way and said "She's on drugs." My mouth dropped open and I quickly explained I had a tooth pulled and was on pain medication for 2 days, how I staggered the dose to get him to his appt, and that's why we didn't do school..... etc. Then after his shot, the nurse said to my son"You can go, buddy, if you were driving we'd make you wait a few minutes!" On the way out the door my son whispered "I almost told her you let me drive sometimes." I was totally expecting social services on my doorstep, lol.

And by the way, I love your boys' drive to solve the problem, and think their post was great (of course I'm the mom of a boy myself...)

I don't know whether you misspelled "brother" on purpose or not, but either way it's pretty funny. You got it right about the "big bother".

What a great story of what your boys are up to. It's funny to hear what they've been doing to solve the stinky problem.
What about a hungry little rat dog to go up under there and grab that nasty carcass for you?

Willielisa! That is so funny. You are on drugs! What a great comment to remember. Very funny.
When people would ask my boys "Where do you go to school" or "what grade are you in" then my kids used to think it so very amusing to say "We don't go go school!" and just leave it at that. They would not even offer the "homeschooling" part. I was sure some school-truant-officer would show up one day.
The boys did haul two chunks of skunk hair out from under the house. They hooked it with a pole but only hair came out. Skin was hooked to one chunk but no body parts so it really must be rotted good.
Thank you deconjim about the OdorBan. Several people mentioned it. We tried Walmart and Lowe's but they did not have it. We will try Sam's since several people said it might work. I did not know it was the same as Febreeze. Thank you.
Never a dull moment. And....for the most part we are thankful for it.

Our local WalMart has Odoban so we are getting some of it tomorrow. The inside of the Cabin still smells almost OK this afternoon but with the nasty rotting skunk body underneath, we still need help. Will let you know how to works.
I hate skunks.
