they have bloody butcher and other OP corn in 1/2, 1, and 4# increments for $7, 11, and 37 increments. I ordered from them for the first time this year so I can't comment on anything other than the speed at which my order was processed/shipped (great)

Cossack ... do you have or know of a reliable source for Hickory Cane Corn. My neighbor planted some last year with intentions of saving the seed. Hickory Cane has 8 rows of kernels and his produced corn with 14 rows .... so someone selling it to him screwed up. His corn got high and had ears up to 18 inches long .... quite a sight. He likes the yield and is planting it anyway..... but I want to buy some Hickory Cane. There is a Hickory King which supposedly is a strain of cane .... but some of those people selling it are saying it has 10-12 rows of kernels so I doubt they know what they have. I am looking for a reliable source.

From all the old books about corn I've read, Hickory King and Hickory Cane appear to be the same corn. I think what you call it sort of depends of where you're from. I've grown Hickory King and most of the ears had eight rows. A very small percentage did have more than eight rows but I think that is just normal with all open pollinated corn. I've grown five different varieties of OP corn and never did find any of them to always produce the same number of rows on all ears. I think if you grow Hickory King and find most of the ears to have eight rows you can be confident that you have not been sold bad seed. E&R Seed in Indiana offers Hickory King.

Thanks fatrat

The neighbors corn had a varying number of rows some more than 14. These Southern corn varieties will be tricky to grow and get dried in our shorter growing season. Also we try to plant in the valley where wind is not so apt to knock over these outrageously tall stalks.

Johnny Dolittle,

Why do you want a Southern variety if you are not in the South? There are some very good varieties both white and yellow that would work well in your area. For yellow, Leaming, Reids Yellow Dent, Lancaster Sure Crop, Minnesota 13, for white Silver King or Silver Mine. One of those is bound to mature well in your area.

Just ordered their 228gr (1/2 pound) for $7 shipping was $3.50. Not bad since another place wanted $3/oz and $5.60 shipping....

Just wanted to mention that the Bloody Butcher I raised this Fall grew to about 10 feet and had a hellacious root system.

Most stalks had 2 ears and more had 3 or 4.
