Too many issues with keeping a skunk..... if you have mouse issues and cats aren't cutting it, get a terrier!!

I have wild skunks around all the time. No problem with chickens because my chickens aren't on the ground at night. Plus my chicken coop door is at least three feet above the ground. I never understood why people put them ground level.

We had some friends that had a pet intact skunk and he never sprayed but they worried that he would some day so took him to the vet to get de-scented and he died during the operation.

They have to be descented at a very young age or the glands get too involved in the muscles. You can give them the ferret rabies vaccination, it works just isn't recognized because the skunk people haven't got testing done that proves it's effectiveness. If they aren't neutered, they will still have a musky odor or if they need deworming (their stripes also yellow when they need deworming). A healthy neutered skunk has less odor than any dog I've had.

I have had standards, silverbacks, chocolate, smoke and an apricot skunk. They've now been outlawed here.... (You can have one from an in-state breeder and there aren't any)

My mom has a skunk. I was one of those "the mama got killed" deals and she took one of the babies. It was de-scented and neutered by her vet. It doesn't have much personality for a pet. It lives outside in a dog run because it did not get over freaking out when she ran the vacum cleaner and some other household noises. I don't see it capable of being much of a mouser, it never learned to hunt. It is fluffy and beautiful, it just doesn't do much of anything. Get a cat or put out traps for mice.

I hate skunks and even the ones that don't stink! A skunk just died up under one of our Cabins and we still cannot get the stink out yet. Gross. Nasty animals.

I think a cat would be a better choice or a whole lot of DCon.

I don't see how it could do much or how you could really see his personality if he's outside in a dog run!

My mother always talked about the litter of skunks they raised when she was a girl. They lived in one of the box stalls out in the barn and she said they were the cutest things ever. When they grew up they gradually left, so they weren't real pets, but they sure won her over! Probably a litter of kittens of any type is great to a kid, though.

These stories are so cool, thank you for sharing.
A friend in the barn and keeping it's stinker intact seems to be the best for me.
I've relocated the cutest little skunks and killed some too, so this is better for me.
yes, I have chickens and guineas, they'll have to get along too.
