Does your truck have power steering? If so, tapping the power steering pump will do you better than carrying a wheel driven pump unit.

Things like that sound neat, until you start adding up the cost of the parts and figuring out how heavy it ends up being.

Not saying don't do it. Certainly if you really want to, go for it. Just saying that there are better ways to get there.

Back'n the 1950's

usta be some hoopies aroun' here...Cut off saws mounted 'n back of model
t's...they chopped off the back an cobbled a sorta bed on with the saw hanging outa one side of the bed The other end with the belt pulley directly over the tire..They'd pull up to a slab pile or poles and block one wheel and jack the other tire up 'til the tire touched the pulley..most of 'em had a throttle that could be pulled outa the dash and set..put 'er in gear and cut wood..Three men could cut a whole winters wood in a long after noon...

With out a picture I guess everyones coming up with there own mental Image.

I like your thinking Riverman sort envisioning using it to power a lift gate now...LOL

My thinking is it could be used to power lot of things though.

here is a sketchup model I did real quick just basic but close to what i originally seen.

what would you call it? - Homesteading Questions

May be we can all get on the same page and go from here?

should be self explanatory basically two ramps with rollers and on the drive side was a power take off.

My trucks has a four barrel.so a long Idle screw would work for speed control.

The problem I see with this design is when the pully side gets some load on it it will stop and the other side will turn unless you got positive traction. If you left one side on the dirt---the other side will turn, but it would not be as safe because if your pully side got a load on it it------better hope the truck is chained down.

Yep, a regular differential won't like that setup. A good candidate for an Air Locker....

I never said "don't do it" ! I just said it sounded dangerous. I should have added it sounds interesting and like it just might work.

I wasn't shooting for you meanwhile just wanted to put that issue to bed.

thats a simplified image just to give some Idea, there was additional gearing in the drive side. giving some mechanical advantage.

though I do see the issue you raise.

what about having the non drive side rollers under more tension perhaps through a clutch of some sort.

Now that looks dangerous!! I have a log splitter that looks like that. It hooks to the PTO of my tractor----dangerous but it will outsplit a hydraulic splitter. I have not used it in 25 years.

That's really cool... I could see mounting it on the PTO of a tractor... A lot more torque..

Yep, do a youtube search for a "bark Buster" wood splitter. It works good if the wood is not stringy.

Yep, Just get a locking differential and your problems are solved.

We have a strict rule around here. If someone is going to do something dangerous (which happens a few times a week.....sometimes a day) then another adult driver has to be on the property and ready to drive to the ER with whoever gets hurt!

I like troubleshooting. We ask all kinds of questions on HT and someone usually points out what we have forgotten about or what is dangerous and sometimes they tell me what is flat out stupid! Its good to have a group to turn to for brainstorming ideas.

Good luck with it. Post photos later.

your image is what i had pictured, looks similar to a dyno setup i saw 40 years ago, if it was a homemade rig, hard to say, the gentleman that owned it was very skilled at building things.
