Wow, I have a DH that is athlete condition, stronger than any other man his size I have ever met, works as a Machinist/Welder, lifts, is very muscular, rides his bike, says he is full of energy and feels great (weighs what he did in high school and is one sexy guy at 55). Since he is almost thirty pounds lighter, I also find him more physically attractive. I lost weight, wear the same size as I did in high school, and DH is thrilled. With FMS & CFS, I enjoy hiking, working out, have fun riding on the back of my DH's motorcycle, and lead a very active lifestyle.

This leads me to wonder if they weren't eating enough food, period! I eat a lot, or start dropping weight. DH loads up his plate, but eats an athlete Paleo diet.

We have been eating like this since early Spring, but I have been off sugar to for close to five years now.

I am so happy for you! Diet is my major trigger, and since we heat with wood, I am also doing great!

Addressing the meat, easier than quoting again... I eat a variety of meats, including seafood (freshwater and saltwater). We live by the cleanest area of the Hood Canal, and our seafood is excellent, regularly tested, too. We are also close to freshwater... Fishing, crabbing, shrimping, clamming, harvesting oysters organic local beef, same for chicken, our homegrown pork, and the list goes on.

When I modified my diet, it was for health reasons, same for DH. His weight loss was a bonus! I was already to my target weight, just work to keep it consistent. When I went on Paleo, I began losing weight, so adjusted to increase COMPLEX carbs, not start eating unhealthy empty carbs like pasta... That causes sugar spikes...

Yes, it's called carb flu. Your body is in withdrawls. It can last up to a couple of weeks. For me, it lasted about 5 days, but it will go away. It does feel like you have the flu though.

I eat grass-fed locally produced beef and local pastured pork. Pastured chicken is available, too. Veggies from the garden or grocery store. Milk, yogurt, cheese from my own goats' milk. Next summer, I'm going to have a few chickens for home grown eggs.

I do purchase nuts. Walnuts are available locally, and we have our own pecan trees. I purchase almonds, macadamia, cashew, etc.

Sure wish I could grow avocados!

It would be so cool to get fresh seafood, we raise chickens, rabbits and I have a Jersey steer growing out.

Last night I grilled shrimp seasoned with EVOO, Soy Sauce and fresh garlic. I also made a pasta salad with Tinkyada White Rice Pasta Spaghetti Style Gluten Free -- 16 oz - Vitacost I added broccoli, bell peppers, green onions, cherry tomatoes and made my own Italian Dressing. I ate a small portion of the salad, I am just not ready to give up everything yet so there will be substitutions...lol, The spaghetti was really good, DH liked it a lot. For dessert we had strawberries with a dollop of cool whip.

I totally agree, there is a big difference of having a potato once or twice a week vs every night or several times a day~

Folks, I have celiac disease and haven't had wheat anything for going on 9 years now. It's hard at first giving up the bread, baked goods, etc., but will get easier, I promise. Basically, I eat mostly paleo. About once a month or so I'll want a pasta fix (brown rice pasta). I used to eat more gf oatmeal but not so much anymore. I still eat popcorn. I doubt I'll ever give up popcorn.

Over the past 10 years, I've been paying very close attention to how various foods make me feel. I haven't bought the Wheat Belly book yet because I don't know if I want to commit to it. I have found several blogs to assist with this trial period though, including the author's website.

In this thread, I have read a few references to people still eating corn, popcorn, tortilla chips, etc... from time to time, though it isn't part of the diet. I found this rather interesting because I find that I cannot eat obvious corn or rice products without overeating them.

When I make a pan of cornbread, it must be a small one so that there are no dinner leftovers to go back for. When I buy a bag of tortilla chips, I'm likely to keep going back for more, whether there is something to dip them in or not.

I only use brown rice, but find that I have the same issue when I make beans and rice or dirty rice. I really will keep returning to the pot! I've never had that issue with items made with wheat. I've been a hardcore oatmeal fiend for years. That has been awfully hard to go without for the past few days.

Just curious but, does anyone else have that kind of reaction to rice or corn products?

I don't have my Wheat Belly book yet, but I'm on day 5 of no wheat or grain. I don't understand though, I keep seeing "just eat meat, fruit, veggies and nuts" but then not to eat potatoes..

I've been eating meat, lots of sweet potatoes (cuz I adore them) some regular potatoes, and when I crave sweets, a trail mix that I make myself with dried cherries, blueberries, dates, pecans, salted roasted almonds, yogurt covered raisins and a sprinkling of dark chocolate chips.

Water, coffee, and red wine to drink. I can't say I've noticed anything at all yet, but then I wouldn't expect to in 5 days.... or if what I'm eating is "okay" either

This thread has been extremely interesting and helpful.
I haven't tried it yet.

Without reading the book, I already believe this theory makes some sense because of the Atkins results I have seen in the past.

I attended my 30 year high school reunion last weekend. My classmate has an extreme family history of high blood pressure, some excess weight, and death in the mid 50's range. He still takes some blood pressure med, but recently cut out all wheat and gluten. He lost weight comfortably, and blood pressure is 125/70. Fantastic.

Dang, someone in the office left muffins for everyone, and I just opened a banana nut one. This will take some serious consideration and concious effort to get started if I decide to give it a go.

Many years ago, when I switched from regular soft drinks to sugar free, that happened to me too. A few days of yuck, but once you get past it, don't go back!
Also had the headache pretty bad, and some queeziness back when I tried the Atkins thing. Again, it was just a hump to get over and then all is good.

I hope you feel better soon.

For a few folks, yes, you simply eat meats, fruits, veggies, and nuts, BUT there are restrictions. I consider potato a cheat, as it is a simple carb, to be very limited. That said, sweet potatoes aren't the same, so they aren't limited the same.

Just Google Paleo Lifestyle Diet; lots of info with two weeks of menu planning, as well as the recipes.

Not eating enough could be the reason. But, my son is a full time student and they have two little kids. I asked what they are paying a month for groceries and it was a lot more than ours is. I told them they couldn't afford to spend that kind of money on food and they needed to start buying cheaper food or they wouldn't have enough money to get them through the semester. And we don't help them out if they need money.

Mark Sisson, who runs a website advocating the Paleo lifestyle, wrote an article this morning about the harmfulness of wheat. It is a short article as he has written about it many times before, so it is just a refresher, but it touches on gluten sensitivity and celiac disease.

My grocery budget is much less eating this way, as I spend nothing on junky snacks, no soda, no purchased fruit juices, use much less milk. Even if I was purchasing my fruits/veggies from local farmers, I'd still spend less.

For any trying to cut down food expenses, please talk to your friends and family. Buy bulk and split the expense!

It amazes me how often good food goes to waste. Right now, you see Apple trees loaded with fruit, see apples all over the ground, just going to waste. Whatever is in abundance locally, should be preserved for shortages later. I have worked hard to preserve everything I can, so nothing is wasted. I know some of you are in areas where there were crop failures, so this isn't an option. I saw a CL ad looking to barter for apples. He built a cider press and offered to make it and give some back to the person donating the apples.

I just ordered my 1/4 grass fed beef for the freezer. They are giving me the "less desirable" cuts like the tongue and oxtails, liver and kidneys, plus lots of bones for soup/stock. She said they'd just been sitting in her freezer since most retail folks just don't want them. They will deliver to me on Monday, I am so excited!
Like Lori above, I have been blessed with lots of fruit given to me from friends and neighbors. I am canning and freezing all I can!

I don't have a problem with rice or corn products, I have never been a rice eater only on occasions same with tortilla etc(that is DH's category)I do like whole corn though but for the most part whole corn is grown here at the house. I do use cornmeal occasionally, never been much of a corn bread eater. Popcorn is another occasional food(another DH love) My downfall is dairy and sweets, even potatoes I can do without and it doesn't bother me. I am a sugarholic and I love my cheese, real butter and love my pasta. I don't eat a variety of vegetables but I am learning and expanding my horizon..lol That is one reason I don't think I would do well on Paleo diet because I would be cheating too much. But I am going to focus as meats, veggies, fruits and nut be the focus point of my meals...and the things I like dairy, etc use those in minimal amounts and re-think my ways of cooking things. I love nuts and I love fruits. My main thing is to cut out the wheat and by products of wheat.

I want to wish everyone good luck, I would also like to hear updates on how everyone is doing and if they are noticing a difference in their overall health. Is there some where that we could receive updates?

I dont know about everyone else's Aldi's but we get some pretty good deals at ours on fresh produce that we dont grow, also I frequent the FM here in Nashville and also local orchards again for foods that we dont grow. We planted 21 fruit trees this year so it will be awhile for that fruit to come in. So I bought 14 gallons of strawberries from a local producer down the street, bought 1 1/2 bushel of apples from a local orchard and bought 16 pints of blueberries from Aldis and then found several blackberry patches on our land. I also was able to get a bushel of peaches from a local producer. I put all of this up this summer and fall. Buying in bulk and also visiting local producers really helps in keeping the prices down...also buying when things are on sale at the grocery store will also help with the cost.

My apples cost me 45.00 a bushel and half, but I was able to do so much with them and it is food that will last me and DH for quite sometime without having to pay higher prices in the winter during off season.
