Let me answer that inquiry with a question.
Why do humans cover themselves in perfunes and colognes?
To cover thier natural scents.

That cartoon is so funny! I guess a whole lot of dogs get to roll in poop and are happy about it. We keep baby shampoo up at the barn just for the poop covered Dogs!

its not to cover their scent its to elevate status.
Canines live in a world of smells we don't.
The more you stink the badder you are.
they still have their odor, just coupled with others.
Simular to some one covering them selfs with tats or certain garb.
we are visual based not scent.
but both respond well to vocalization also.
one reason we where able to co-habitat.

Downhome: Our dogs are way bad this morning and must really have elevated status! Their stinky status is so high that I just put them up in the barn! We went for a hike and they found bear poop again and rolled all over it.

My sons are marking a bike trail and could not wash the dogs, again, and so I locked them in the barn for now. Bear poop has to be the worst smelling poop of all. The coyote poop smells too and yes, dog poop is gross but bear poop is the most foul of all.

While we were hiking we saw at least 8 piles of bear poop - all right smack in the middle of the bike trails! We have having a Wedding Bike Race out here in three weeks and so now, part of the preparations has to be that someone with a shovel will hike around and toss bear poop out of the trails!

Dogs roll in all poop. Especially behind the ears, right where the collar sits. They also eat it. Ours especially like calf poop. Thats the favorite, with hard balls of turkey poop being number two. It rolls on the tongue like an everlasting gobstopper!

The first time I brought mule onto the property and she dumped in the front yard, dobermann ran up to the pile, licked it and grabbed a hunk and took off.

I think rotting deer carcass trumps bear scat any day of the week.

Yuck - a rotten deer carcass might smell worse then bear poop but I don't want to find out. We are keeping the dogs close to the porch today since I don't want to have to haul out the baby shampoo again today. Too much bear poop to shovel it up. I will be happy when cold air hits here and the bears crawl off someplace to sleep for a while.
