There are really very few jobs here. I don't have a "job" anymore. I did what I could all summer. I babysat 2-5 kids all summer ( 15,15,13,10 and 8 years old), looked after dogs, feed horses for the neighbor, scrap and soda cans....and whatever. I am having a very hard time finding a "real" job. I still see no reason to steal anything.
.
Even the stores are tightening security, I had to get my newspapers from the customer servce desk because people are stealing the coupons..hello....what makes getting a record for theft on a newspaper?

To me it seems ever since junkyards went in around here thieves have been looking for all the junk they can find to cash in. And now days it's hard to find any junk piles as they've all been cashed in already. So the next best thing is to steal it. In the last year 50 percent or more of the houses on the road I live on, has been broke into. Including my aunts house just a 100 ft. away from mine. I slept right through it!!!
This morning a kid on my school bus said in the middle of the night someone was trying to break into thier car out on the carport. Said when his mom looked out the door a man took off running to the road and jumped in a vehicle that was waiting on him and sped away.

My BIL just discovered day before yesterday that his hunting camp had been broken into. Somebody shot the lock off the door with a shotgun. Took his duffle bag full of hunting clothes, all his Dewalt tools (over $600 worth), a can of loose change and some other things. Sheriff's Dept. is putting up surveillance cameras because they feel sure the burglars will be back.
We planted all our road frontage in trees and our house sits a half mile off the road. No access on the north and west sides, limited access (locked gates) on the south and east sides. We don't think anyone would ever try to break in though because of the 19 dogs who do NOT like strangers and the fact that folks around here think I'm crazy and know I'm not afraid to use a gun.

Last two times I took stuff in I had to give my drivers license, my license plate number and my address and phone number. One place asks for a thumb print.

A man in our area had a thief try to steal his 22 inch cut 2 hp push mower last week.

Seems sort of strange.
A person has to have an ID to sell a few beer cans but don't have to have an ID to vote.

great responses..sure I agree that it isn't great to "advertise" what kind of security or lack of that you have..but I also disagree with people that say NOT to put trees and shrubs around your home..because it gives theives protection..maybe in some ways it does, but if you reinforce with motion sensor lights and other things then at least you know if they are there..
sometimes even if you don't have dogs, a sign that says, beware, dangerous dogs, is helpful...

Exactly! I bought a bottle of wine at Target the other day. She asked for my ID (I'm 51) but okay. She scanned it! Really? I don't like this.

One bad thing about motion sensor lights and bushes and trees is the wind will move the limbs enough to set the lights off. Can be quite bothersome if you live in a windy area.

I know what you mean. A few weeks ago I stopped at a dollar store and bought a 6 pack of beer. They asked for my ID. I am 62 years old. I thought it was a joke at first. I left it setting on the counter. Some things are just past stupid.

We live WAY out here in the boondocks, and security is a big deal. Having a pack of coon hounds doesn't really make me feel all that safe. I mean they notice just about everything, and I do mean everything. Our nearest neighbor is a mile from us and I know that he will come if he can. We bought these really nice gates, but they are somewhere around the bottom of DH's get er done list. So I keep my doors locked and take a look when the hounds sound off. One day I glanced down the drive and saw someone in a flannel shirt just standing at the cattle guard. Usually if you see one of the farms hands they wave, but not this guy. That will get the hair on the back of your neck standing up! I went back inside the house and called DH. I then got my little ol 357 out and put it on my hip. I went about my business, but I will admit to being a little jumpy. After DH got home we got in the truck and checked out what the guy was doing at the cattle guard. And thats when we GOT HIM. "He" was a piece of flanned fabric that had blown over the post of the cattle guard. When the wind got up that day, the fabric fell to the ground. Yeah, we do laugh about it now, but it was a good wake up call and it is good to know that I can still get a lot done with a hand gun on my hip. We keep everything locked up and have security lights. Everyone around here knows that I am at home most of the time and you can't tell if I am here by looking for my car. I keep her in the shop most of the time. There have been more break ins in the area, but I guess you just have to stay vigilant and keep your eyes open.

I agree, most of the thefts around here are chalked up to meth heads. Years ago I ran an ad for a warehouseman. Usually I'd get 30+ phone calls on an ad. This time I put in drug testing mandatory, and got 3.

May depend on what country you're in. HERE in MO, you have to have ID to vote.

their job counts on that.
I usually go to the same store so they know me.
But even they checked my ID at on point.
Now scanning it, I would take some issue.

here you have to have a photo id to vote as well, wish it was that way everywhere..tired of dead people voting..
also please if you have military folks, remind them there is only a few days left to get their absentee ballots mailed.
as for the wind blowing the motion sensor lights on and off, yeah but you can set them for a higher motion..and you can flip them off in a windstorm..we dont' 'have that much wind here..and ours generally only go off with something larger than a dog..so we can count on ours..we do shut them off with 50 +MPH winds occasionally

Ive heard of a few people having animals droped off at their farms too. They would go to work and come home to find another horse or two in their pastures. I heard one story about two friends who went trail riding and when they got back there were two skinny horses loaded into their trailer with a note that said, cant take care of them anymore.

They're checking ID's here in Oklahoma too when you vote. My cousin and his wife are the people who work at my voting precinct and his quote to me was "although your my cousin and I defenitely know who you are, I still have to see your driving license!"
Of course being the jokester he is, he immediately turns to his wife and shows her my picture and starts laughing and joking about it.
