We had those when I was growing up in Northern California and called them Halloween spiders. But I don't remember seeing them since we moved. Sorry, I'm deathly afraid of spiders so I can't honestly say I miss them...

Had one in the corner of the small pasture last year with an egg case. I haven't seen any this year though.

A "Charlotte" spider would be an orb spider. This is not one of that type. Orbs can also be tamed even more than a garden spider. We "imported" some of both types from my inlaws farm 30+ years ago. Had garden spiders for only about 15 years but at least one "Charlotte" has showed up every fall since.

Garden/writing spiders are my favorite. They show up just before fall starts, so I'm always gleeful to see them.

I have two hanging around my back deck lately.

Ever wonder where they come from? You never see a small one all summer and suddenly there are big huge adults showing up about now. With their vivid colors, one should be able to easily see them without their webs.

I like my garden spiders but not up close and personal.....like when I run face on into one while on the mower.

I noticed DH doing the kung fu/hoochie coochie dance after running into one while on the tractor yesterday.

On second thought, it's not so funny when you're trying to keep from jumping off your machine while it's still running and in gear.

We actually see the young ones hanging around quite often. They are almost microscopic compared to their mothers and when they first start making the web, you don't realize they are yellow garden spiders until they reach adulthood.

The males look even more different than the females. We sometimes confuse them with wolf spiders since we have those in abundance in this area as well.

Sorry, I didn't have that problem. Here's a different link! And an update... We just had a bunch of these babies hatch! They were covering our entire window. Scattered like the wind after a few minutes!

I just saw one yesterday. We see a few a year, but there were more in Indiana. As children we were taught to never bother them. My mom called them TRIXIES.

I get them in coastal Maine. They seem to tolerate nearby activity quite well.

I love these spiders! They're colorful enough to let you know they're there. And here, they're everywhere.

We call them Leapers. Many years ago, when my bff first moved to the country, she found one of these out in her horses' run-in shed. She dragged her husband down there by the hand and worriedly asked him to identify what that was. He asked her some questions about what it looked like so she'd get plenty close, and then he said "They're Leapers. They leap, you know...."

She skittered back so fast it was hilarious.

I had a bay horse come back from a ride in tall grass with white legs one fall because we collided with so many webs. I like to find them in my raspberries these days; I'm hoping they get the bugs that get my berries. They really are docile; the worst thing I've ever seen is they use their webs like a trampoline to try and scare you off.
