I don't know how your land to be cut lies, but I had to have pine timber cut on my place in north Alabama back in the late ninties due to pine beetles. The whole county and really all north Alabama was overrun. But based on my experience, I would not let a logger in to cut during the winter again. They made a real mess on my farm. The contract I signed with the forestry company that was the buyer stipulated that the damages, in this case ruts had to be repaired. Had a dozer out for a week the next spring, and still only could fix at the pasture areas. I still have deep ruts in many places up and down the hills where they were snaking through hardwoods that would have caused more damage to the trees to try and repair than just leaving them. So I would cut the extension off at the normal end of dry season, say end of October at the latest. I would also consider charging a 10-15% premium or the $3000 dollars the forester recommended, whichever is higher.
