Maybe it would be like in the movie--"build it and they will come"! If you put out the word of what you would like to start through local church and extension office announcements, interest would grow. Something that might prove to be popular would be a mentoring program. "Older", more experienced people could help teach skills to the younger participants. I know I always wished I would have paid attention to grandma when she was canning, making home remedies, etc. Is there a 4-H group near you? You could possibly offer to teach a class or two. That could lead to involvement with member's moms and grandmoms. Invite locals who are known for their skills to be guest speakers and make it a little social event. I bet it wouldn't take long to get something going.

Oh phew..... I am a regular over on their board... Oh my, I think the farmgirls would die laughing... Those gals get dirty... probably dirtier and more country than a lot of ladies on this board, at least the general readership.
Mary Jane Butters herself has also commented that while the cover shoots are fun, she feels ridiculous looking so unrealistically clean.
I was just saying today to my mom that all my subscriptions are up and I'm trying to decide what to renew. I do have to say of MJF, I love the recipes they publish, and the great "upcycle" craft projects.
To downsize my magazine stash, I got myself a huge binder, and plastic sheets. I pulled articles from all my back to the land magazines (Grit, Mother Earth, Hobby Farm Home, Hobby Farms, Countryside, MJF etc.) MJF pages made my clippings more than any other magazine, followed closely by Mother Earth's building plans.

I would love to have a group of homemakers getting together but, I don't think it will happen near me because the younger women just aren't interested for the most part. I get MJF and really like it. Think I will call the Extension office tomorrow and see if they have anything like that but, I'm sure they don't.

I'm on the MJF site also. But all the get groups are to far from me or full. But it is a wonderful site. I'm more of a lurker there, kinda like here LOL

Thank you, thank you for the link to the Mary Jane website! I have found a group reasonably near me and sent them a request! I will also drop by my extension office tomorrow to check on a homemakers group. Why didn't I think of that before?

I'm in Northern Illinois and many of the Extension groups have shut down too. Mainly because the ladies got too old. I was in one myself for several years. Back when I was in 4-H in the 60's, each county had an extension office, and both a farm and assistant farm advisor, and a home and assistant advisor. The assistants generally directed the 4-H programs, and the advisors ran columns in the local paper and published the top DHIA herd info. That's all gone now. Some of the county extensions consolidated. I am in a farming area, and I think there is just one person advising it all now.
The Extension Service used to have great pamphlets.
Years ago, they used to share a building with Farm Bureau and I think FB helped them out a lot, then later on, the Extension had to get their own building.

When hubby and I moved to s Ky, I joined homemakers to meet some of the local ladies. We still meet once monthly and I really enjoy it! It's kind of funny and fun and I look forward to it. We aren't getting alot of new members and it's dying off slow but sure. I will continue to go til they close the doors. Here in Sulphur Well, Ky, my group does alot for our community and we have a huge following - just not many members.
Good luck finding your niche there....! Start your own! Or check with the other ladies in the ext office and see if there is more interested than just you!

Myself. I hate leaving home to even get feed and groceries--BUT--my neighbor lady asked me last night, if I would teach her how to can, and I'm thinking she would love it. Outside Willow Springs here.
