This is true. It's ironic that the term "socialism" has been used erroneously by you shdybrady because when you stop and think that's exactly what's behind the current practice of child-rearing in this country. The idea that children needed to be "socialized" with children of their exact same age only came about with the advent of public schools. Do some research about how public schooling came about and the goals of the creators. One stated goal was to create "good little factory workers."

In reality children need to be comfortable around people of all ages - not just a same age peer group. Life in the real world is not spent with just people your own age. That is the public school world and it ends when kids graduate.

It has been my experience that children who are raised at home by committed parents are much more well rounded and secure. And are far more interesting and well adjusted as adults. I am a product of public schooling and have spent a lot of time with homeschooled children so have been in a position to notice the difference. And there is a huge difference.

Shdybrady a lot of the problem you're having in this thread is that you're talking to a group of people who for the most part are against just accepting govt. indoctrination as a way of life. We just tend to have a different mentality. We look at it as our responsibility - and a privilege - to raise our own kids. Many of us chose to homeschool. Aside from the fact that there are just too many bad things that can happen when you aren't caring for your own child - nobody cares about your child like you and your family do, I will guarantee you that - many of us just didn't/don't want our children raised by entities whose goal is to turn out a bunch of little robots who are all the same and lack free and critical thinking skills.

I realize that you and your wife are most likely a product of public schooling. But you guys are already showing evidence of independent thought by not buying into the whole "living on credit and in debt forever" American way that most other people in this country just accept without question. And by your interest in a homesteading way of life. I just hope when that when you're a little older you two don't look back with a little more age/experience under your belts wishing you had spent more time with your son. If he turns out as intended by the "powers that be" he may not have the same independence and critical thinking skills that you guys have. I know it seems impossible now but you are gonna blink and he will be grown up. It happens so fast.

This.

Exactly.

People are no longer trained in critical thinking, they don't look at the genesis of current thought, nor consider the thinkers of the past.

It's sad, and it's rather frightening that we are blessed with wonderful, creative minds, and are taught only to toe the party line.

I was raised in Catholic School back in the days of nuns in habits, but I was taught how to think critically, how to analyze, how to reason. (And the parish priests weren't even Jesuits!)

Human relationships are nurtured in families, not classrooms.

I think everyone has had a chance to express their comments and suggestions. So, I'm closing this thread before any flaming gets started.
