Glad you enjoyed 'our' zoo, Calhoon. Howdy, neighbor. Scary sounding snake, though....now I'm going to have to google a pic.

alert:

There is no such thing as a poisonous snake. There are several venomous varieties though. Off my now.

DH and I like snakes and leave them alone. We have relocated a copperhead from a wood pile to the edge of the woods so it wouldn't bother the wrens nesting in the pile. We also stop to shoo snakes off the road before people who hate them run them over. We do live with them and simply take the same precautions we would when sticking a hand where one can't see for any reason (heavy gloves or a grabber).

We have three types of poultry and zero rodent problems. None of the snakes bother the birds either, though we did catch a green rat snake in the act of eating an egg in the hen house last fall. I snatched him up and shook him and he dropped the egg (and yes, we ate it). We haven't seen him back - too embarrassed is my guess

A few summers ago we were out hiking and DH stepped over a small copperhead. I told him not to back up so he wouldn't step on it (I didn't want him to hurt the snake ) and we both pulled out cameras out for some pictures. The poor thing raised his head and opened his mouth in warning and we just kept taking pictures. He finally turned around and left in disgust at our lack of freakage.

There is a timber rattler that has been on my driveway about 120 yards from the house numerous times. The first few times I would stop, he wouldnt move and I would get out and shoo him away. I have learned that if I just sit there in the pickup for a minute or two he will move off the road. I love snakes and this one is very beautiful. I have goats and dogs and they seem to get by just fine together.

Our neighbor told us that they'd never seen a rattlesnake here in the many years they have lived next door. I was mowing the front yard (which is pretty small) on Weds morning and ran a rattlesnake up into a bush (he climbed up to almost eye level), where DH took him out with snake shot. We've since taken to wearing high rubber boots when we head out to flood irrigate on the back of the property. Gave me quite a scare!

When we lived on our ranch in Alabama I was always worried about copperheads, but we had plenty of ducks and geese roaming around the house and barn and I never saw one in the seven years we lived there.

We have not seen a rattler here but neighbors killed a huge one that would not stay out of their driveway. They shooed it off a few times but it kept coming back near their dogs. So - they shot it. We have the copperheads and I don't like 'em. They bite the dogs, it gets infected and I have to pay a Vet bill.

We looked around the house and did not find any more copperheads near the house. That is good. Maybe the one that was on the porch was just looking for trouble but it is gone now.

Where we live the only kind of snake is a venomous one, Coral snakes, sidewinders, and about 15 kinds of rattlesnakes. You see one you kill it, because there's no way it's anything else.

We were working in a huge field yesterday which had a small creek running through it. I thought surely we would see snakes but not a single snake! There were lots and lots of big Salamanders in the creek though.

Venomous snakes lose their heads here too. In the eight years we've lived here, the only ones we've seen (and killed) are water moccasins. Hubby killed one about two weeks ago near the chicken pen.

Where I grew up in Alabama we had moccasins, rattle snakes (big timber rattlers) and copperheads. I do NOT like copperheads...they're scary! Glad you saw that one before it got you!

OK - I spoke too soon above when I said we did not see any snakes in the field. Last evening we were working still clearing the same field. A huge fat copperhead ran out at my younger son. Thank goodness he saw it and called his brothers. They killed it with a shovel. I put photos on another thread if anyone wants to see a dead copperhead!
