Its not always seniors, it seems like teens are buying into the 'Axe' cologne commercials that the more stink you wear the more sexual playmates you will get.

Ach, that stuff stinks!
Fortunately, my sense of smell is still alive and thriving! I have asked my DH on occasion to check to see if my cologne was too strong. Again, I believe that less is more.

and when you go to an event, or church or some other gathering, usually there is SO much smell floating around, its already over kill. fresh air and sunshine are the best smells, well, and my horse, he smells good too, but some may dispute that!

One absolutely becomes desensitized to fragrances. I have a small bath/body business where most of my production is done in the span of one month. On long production runs, I used to think there was something wrong with batches made later in the day, and definitely by the end of the month. I just couldn't smell them anymore. This also led me to wonder what I smelled like when I went to my corporate job after mucking out the barn or any other farm-related smelly job, lol! I mean, was my shower enough? <g>

There have been many times that I have left church because of the smells. My daughter starts having an asthma attack and my allergies start up. Oh, and sometimes baking soda can rub you raw when used as a deodorant. I prefer corn starch. Blessings, Kat

In my college English class i sit behind a lady from turkey she wears lots of strong perfume i get to class about 20 mins before her and always push her desk a few feet forwards, she hasn't noticed yet. When you wear so much you lose out on all the other good smells.

I had a customer bring in a table to refinish/repair the top. He said they had set one of the plug in liquid air fresheners on the table. Knocked it over.
It stripped the finish down to the wood. Did better than strippers i use.
Makes me wonder what's in "air fresheners".

Ok, I'll confess, I LIKE essential oil smells. Put them in gm soaps, and use them with carrier oil as lotion. BUT- I get to where I do not notice them as well. Just yesterday, was wearing one at the library, I did not think it was strong, but the librarian said (she had just opened a closet not far from the check out desk) "whew! that closet stinks!" I think she was smelling the woodsy essential oil.... this thread is a good reminder

I love Mrs. Meyer's lavender!
One night, I was out of shampoo, so I washed my hair with it ... my hair turned out so nice, I've been using it ever since!

On the other hand...
Is there a better smell than a freshly manured field? I love driving along in the car and suddenly getting a big lungful of manure smell and I look around and, sure enough, there's a freshly plowed field. The smell makes me think of spring and rich, dark soil but city folk usually just gag and turn up their noses at it.
I was behind an old farmer in the grocery store a few months ago. He was in his coveralls and rubber boots and I could smell the manure off him. I just smiled to myself and thought that if anyone else was standing in my place they would think he smelled gross but I respect anyone who works with manure of any kind, it's just about the most honest job you can have!
It's all perspective, I guess, but I would personally prefer an overwhelmingly natural smell to a strong man-made one.

Rubbing alcohol is a great deodorant (got that tip here on HT some time back). It kills the bacteria on the skin which makes your normal human smell funky. You're still going to smell like a human, but not funky.
Axe is VILE. People have so much perfume in the the laundry soap and fabric softeners that they can't smell anything. I have a friend who is horribly sensitive/allergic to chemical smells and perfumes. Whenever I am at the strip mall parking lot, the laundromat is kicking out volumes of laundry perfumes through the dryer venting, and I wonder how she can even get out of her car there. We're talking 100yds away and you can smell it.

I've been able to find some that aren't scented. I can look up the name if anyone is interested.
We use unscented laundry detergent, too. We prefer Arm & Hammer, but now it's really hard to find their no-smell one.

I just tried a different laundry detergent and the smell is so strong I'm going to have to dump it. Can't stand it even though I'm not particularly sensitive to scents. I do try to buy the unscented products when I can though that isn't always possible.

I adore perfume. nobody with a real brain 'pours it on'. a little dot here..little dot there...niice. men? same thing..a little dot here...there...love. I love fabric softener sheets in winter. I love the fresh scent (to me..obviously not you..lol) of pinesol used sparingly in a bucket of water after washing down the bathroom. I love to smell rosemary & lavender EVERYWHERE in my house. I guess I am not as sensitive. when my man dots a bit of lovely on..........I LIKE. and I will always love deodorant. sorry, but people can't smell themselves. if they could...they'd use deodorant and not bathe in scents to the extreme. I've been around lots of folks that don't believe in deodorant. it isn't pleasant on a day that's 90 and humid.

I've found that just the tiniest film of Triple Antibiotic ointment applied to: an underarm or skin fold areas that hold moisture takes care of odor causing bacteria just like it does for an itchy bellybutton (bacteria) Works great to keep skin healthy and odor free if it's not a yeast problem.

I used to work in an office where on occasion a most beautiful Hindi woman would stop by. She wore handmade silk clothing that was gorgeous. She always had nice make up and her nails were painted. She looked beautifully groomed... BUt whooo wheeee she had natural BO.
I suppose that's another reason our ancestors boiled their laundry?

I just bought an Arm & Hammer product that was scented (usually get clear) and just couldn't bear it. So I called the company to let them know (there's always an 800 number if you look hard) and they're sending me a coupon for a new jug AND - will put in my remarks into their consumer response. AND told me how to best get the smell out of my clothes.
My new motto is: Stand up to the stink and just say no!

After almost 13 years of working at a retirement community (400 plus residents, 300 plus staff), our CEO requested all staff to stop wearing perFUMES/scented lotion/cologne. I wanted to stand up and start clapping when she told us. We use to have certain people that came through our clinic to drop something off and we all could smell them 30 minutes later and know they had been through!
Air fresheners are another problem for me. I use to love them in my 20s, but now I have to leave a room if someone has one of those plug in fresheners (?) or misters (especially those bathroom ones).
My good friend loaned me a dress to wear to my daughter's rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding this past summer. It had a perfume scent to it but I wore it anyway. Well, I woke up up with a splitting headache the day of the wedding. I suspected it was from the dress. That dress STILL reeked of perfume after I washed it and gave it back to her.

I like the way people from other cultures and areas smell unique. I've always heard that white Americans smell like a wet chicken.

I think people from different cultures are unique, too. but...white Americans smelling like a wet chicken? hey..soap and go ahead and try deodorant. wouldn't hurt to do a dob of fragrance either. A DOB...for those so sensitive they cringe at the mere thought. light fragrance is amazing. try it...again..LIGHT. there is a science to what scent can do. certain smells really can enhance your love life. not a BATH in the darn scent...but a trickle..OH MY...it is........amazing.
I've been near a person swearing by a dob of baking soda under the arms. listen up.........NOT WORKING. YOU can't smell YOU. the rest of us can.
