Cat Care 101 - What in the World is a "Flea Comb"?
Dear Drizler,
A flea comb is a comb designed with very fine teeth to trap fleas. The teeth are narrower than the live flea and therefore when you comb a pet with fleas you can actually comb out and catch a flea (or the flea dirt which is the bowel movement of the flea).
A flea comb is primarily used in at least 2 situations.
First it is used to diagnose fleas. Many veterinarians use it to easily show clients the presence of fleas on their pets. Some cats go to the veterinarian's office "itching" and the owners wonder why. Fleas can be quite evasive and hard to find and a flea comb can prove their presence.
Second, it can help remove fleas. This can be fairly impractical as it can be very hard to comb out every flea (as they run around like crazy and can be hard to get). They can also be fast (many will jump right off your comb) and hard to kill.
The problem with relying on a flea comb as a flea control solution is that many life forms of the flea live in the yard and in the carpet. If you remove the fleas on your cat, this does not prevent new fleas from jumping on. Alone, this is not an effective method for flea removal.
The best way to deal with fleas is NOT a flea comb but prevention.

Like Benjamin Franklin said over 200 years ago "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".
