I don't worry about here, the kids take care of it. We make 2-3, 700 mile trips to the lake a year and 4-5, 50 miles to the beach for 3 day stays at the cabins. The animals are no harder to care for than dogs or cats. Usually 1 goat to milk. 3 hens, the pigeons and the 2 does and buck and whatever little ones. The kids butcher when needed. I would just as soon stay home but when the opportunity is there, we take them, never know when it could be the last. We have settled in, hard to leave the good life....James

Oh goodness, i am forever being teased about not wanting to leave the farm. It is too hard to find someone to care for the animals the way i want and i just worry about them. It has gotten worse since the farm and boarding stable is "all i do" now. I do not care about shopping and would rather just stay home period. besides, "they" like me here just as I am.

We're the same way. We really pack in the stops during our shopping trips away from the property. And we always try to shop during the times when the crowds aren't as thick. I find myself having less patience with idiots blocking the store aisles while they're chatting on the phone! I just want to get finished and come home.

I'd like to relate a story.
I have an old friend (94 yo. now) that has cattle.
One day his wife said, Shelby, I want you to take me on a cruise on one of those big boats.
Shelby just kind of stared at Letha for a few moments then said. Letha, go ahead and book five rooms on one of those bigt boats.
Letha responded by asking if he wanted to invite their four married children and thier spouses.
Shelby said Nooooo. One room will be for you and I. The other rooms will be for the cows.
I have to have something to do.
The serious side is that they are coming to the end of long lives on this earth. They live by the principle: That if you can't find happiness at home, then you surely won't find it somewhere else.

Yes! We were never homebodies before but we kind of feel like we LIVE on vacation.
I always worry about the animals when we leave and it's hard to kennel our old Pug. He's diabetic and blind and the kennel we used to use (he knew it and loved it there) closed.
Minelson likes this.

I knew somebody who said they loved to travel. "Don't you ever want to travel?" they ask me. I was thinking, "Is there a better place than right here? if not, why would I spend money to go to a lesser place?" Oh, well.

Yep, hate it with a passion. Like Minelson, I don't even like going to the store. Hubby says when he retires in less than two years he is becoming a hermit. Our favorite vacation is a walk down to the pond to sit and listen to the birds and feel the breeze blowing...beats any exotic crowded beach!

Seriously thinking about flying in for the ceremony and flying back on a red eye.

I would never leave my homestead if I didn't have to. OK, maybe twice a year, to see a few loved ones who are within an hour.

I wanna be a hermit, too.

I couldn't imagine saying "Good Bye" to my beloved pets and livestock, and hoping that they would be ok when I got back. I was a "pet sitter" for a year, I worked for a great vet, and let me tell you, it was verrrry stressful. Never again.

maybe that's why we all get along here, oh yeah, I hate leaving too! my kids call me a hermit and hubs often blames me for 'we never go anywhere!" i try to tell them, all my stuff is here, why would I go elsewhere? it costs a ton to leave even for a couple days, and then the animals! I HATE hate leaving them! I can leave them fairly ok with the family or hubs alone, but haven't left them with anyone else yet.

he keeps saying something about taking the oldest on a short trip before she leaves home. 'leaves home' is a statement that about chokes me. the very thought of leaving them and my stomach twists in a knot. but, I DO really want to take her somewhere special before she flies off! its a real difficult place for me to be in.

i find it funny how ppl come to visit this area for vacation, or spend time on a 'farm' visit place, and this is where/what I live every day! In some ways tho. I'd like to get over this almost-fear of leaving the place. just tonight we went out to steak supper at the vfw, and I seen one of our less desirable neighbors nearby, and I think Oh dear, what If?....

I sure feel for those of you who have lost critters or had other catastrophes occur when you try to get away for a few days.

We like fishing, crabbing, shrimping, camping, motorcycling, and hiking. My DH & I are very outdoorsy, enjoy wayyyyyy too much doing all that to stay home 24/7! We have taken week long camping trips, had friends/neighbors care for our critters, lost none of them, and all was well (pigs, chickens, rabbits, 2 cats...). We have left for weekend trips, same scenario, left "Sam" our watchdog, and yep, all was fine when we got back. Now, that we have a 21 ft boat with a cabin, deep hull, just big enough for a nice weekender, yep, jazzed about taking that on fishing trips (all the rest, too), staying in it, too.

Now, gone longer than a week? THAT would make me nervous!

Now, that all said, if I lost critters when we left for just a few days, I'd be hardpressed to leave for even a weekend! I think it is all based on knowing your friends/neighbor/ and/or family will take good care of everything. If that possible, yikes
